Ahhhh, finally, finally spring is here! Are you enjoying a nice warm up in your area? I believe we are suppose to hit near 80 degrees by week's end in our neck of the woods. Glorious!
I was at one of my second homes the other day {Lowe's Home Improvement, the other being Home Depot} when I called hubs to see if he needed anything. I don't know why, but I was shocked to hear my daughter tell me "Daddy's out mowing the grass." Shocked because it finally hit me - Winter is over! This means more work for us, of course, keeping the grass cut and weeds at bay, but at the moment, I'm looking forward to it. It's been a couple of years
I tried to rid myself of my black thumb of death by getting out there and planting a few things...
since we've really done anything with our landscaping and boy, you can tell right now that it needs some major sprucing up! I wouldn't dare show you how dreadful our flower beds and exterior look right now, but a couple of years ago, I tried to rid myself of my black thumb of death by getting out there and planting a few things. There are so many areas around our house that are begging for plants...just so much potential...but I've been reluctant to do much because our time is very limited and any "extra" time has gone to working on interior projects. But someday, I'm going to cut loose and will somehow develop the green thumb I've always wanted! Someday I will have a kitchen garden as well, and I'm thinking about at least starting an herb patch this year. We'll see! Here are a few shots of our front porch a couple of years back. I used an old dresser as a staging area for some plants. Now the dresser is actually being used as a dresser, so I need to keep my eye out for another...
Last year we installed a new front door that I think better reflects cottage style. I'm waiting to paint it until we get around to painting the exterior of the house. There is a lot of siding replacement and repair to do first, though. Tumble-down indeed!
I had forgotten that we even had a shot of the front of our house. Sometimes people write and ask if I would share an exterior photo so I thought I'd post this. Many may be surprised to see that we live in a normal looking little house that right off the bat doesn't seem like a "cottage". I'm trying to think of ways to add some architectural detail to reflect more of a cottage feel. A porch railing? Board and batten siding? Wooden shutters? Window boxes? A cottage style garden in the landscaping bed? Climbing roses? Tin/Metal roof? Painting the house red?
I thought this house was way too small for a family of five when we first drove past it, but it is a little bigger than it looks. Here is a view from the back. The interior, though, isn't as spacious as it may appear from this view. :)
I feel like I'm being a flaky blogger, but this week is going to be another crazy one. Every day for the rest of the week we have something going on that will keep me from blogging, the main event being a big turkey dinner I'm making for out of town and state family coming in on Saturday. So there is a lot of shopping, cleaning, and preparation {including finishing trim for our new beadboard!} to be done...not to mention excavating our daughters' beds where some guest will need to sleep. I told you their room wouldn't stay tidy for long! Photos from my trip and our fireplace and beadboard progress photos will have to wait a little longer...I was going to post a few today but I think hubs has the little memory card reader thing-a-ma-bob with him, or somewhere!
Have a wonderful, BEAUTIFUL week, everyone, and if you have some exterior ideas for me, please do share!
It's still adorable, honey. I have a friend who had 13 children and was a school teacher. They got a job in Wyoming once and the only thing available was a single wide trailer. They are so humble they lived in that with their 13 kids and one nephew for a couple of years. They'd pull up the mattresses in the morning after waking and used them for sitting on in the daytime. Sixteen people in a single wide!!! Can you imagine, chickee! But it's all they could find. Needless to say they didn't teach in that area for long. The wife said to me that if anyone needed any privacy they had to go sit in the car! THAT'S humble, sugar, very humble.

Love the pictures and the white chest outside is adorable. My house is only 1500 square feet, I can stand in the livingroom and see every room in my house from that stop. I only have one daughter at home now so it is cozy and nice for the three of us.
ReplyDeleteWOW! those photos are just dreamy! The dresser is an adorable idea. It is finally warming up here as well although I don't think 80 is in the forecast, maybe 70
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and became a follower! What awesome pictures and ideas you have - I can't wait to browse around some more. :)
ReplyDeleteYou live in such a pretty place . . the weather looks so inviting. Thanks for sharing the beautiful pics!
ReplyDeleteKim, in love with that little dresser and what you did on your front porch! I found a dresser off of Craigslist very similar to that one...I am going to use it in our Master bath for the sinks...now wishing I had another one for my front porch! So cute!! I love your house! I think it does have cottage charm! I am sure eventually it will become the way you envision it...isn't that the story of our lives...always waiting! Missed visiting with you...I too am being a flaky blogger...too much to get done!! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHugs to you,
Victoria
Oh my gosh! What an adorable porch! I am your newest follower... I have followed you for a while thru Bloglovin but just now realized that I had overlooked following on your page. I hope to see you over at my place soon! until later...
ReplyDeleteNothing says cottage better than a patch of daisies and black eyed susans.
ReplyDeleteI love your home, Kim, inside and out.

Who stinkin' cares how big your house is? We are actually considering giving up our 1900 square feet to move in with our parents to help them out. We would have to downsize to one bedroom...now, that is weird for a young couple. But you know, when could I ever have that experience again? I embrace it with a scared oh crap feeling, but still, I embrace it...
ReplyDeleteI wish I could say I had a green thumb too. But it's just wishful thinking! I'm actually in love with your big yard too, along with your cute dresser with the greenery. And I can picture a wrap around porch on your house.
ReplyDeleteAdorable, inviting, dreamy! Size doesn't matter. Charming is charming! What a wonderful setting you have created.
ReplyDeleteSpring is lovely isnt it?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you had a good time on your trip. You travel through Western Ky I take it?
We have been staying pretty busy ourselves. Must be a March thing. =) I think everyone has just been WAITING for spring to get here!
Well have fun and take care! ~ Jessica
Hi Girl :)
ReplyDeleteJust popping by, reading your lovely text and looking at your wonderful images (love the look of red and white) that says nothing else than Spring, I love that we finally have change of the sason!! Oh we have been longing for warmer days, and I truly can feel the same enthusiasm as you share today. Me too are looking forward to cutting the grass, sow new plants, smell the flowers and open up the doors. It is still quite cold here in Norway, about 2-6 degrees by day, down to -2 during the night time. But it is brighter and warmer :) Your lawn is so green, beautiful.
I want to wish you a happy Easter, I hope you have time to enjoy a hole alot of fun. And I also want to thank you for all the wonderful words that you gave me earlier. I will always keep them in my heart.
Please have a beautiful Spring, enjoy it so very much!!
Warm greeting, Aina
What wonderful, springy pictures! You do indeed need to find another dresser to replace the white one, for that looks just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour house looks very nice just as it is. You might add some cottage flair, though, by painting the brick. Actually, I love brick that's been whitewashed--it ends up looking as if it were painted many years ago and the paint has worn off to a beautiful patina. Do you know what I mean? There's a house on my street that has this look--let me know if you want me to snap a photo and send it to you!
Easter blessings to you!
Kim..i love that dresser so cute with the ivy trailing from it. My friend had the ugliest house on OUR block..I should share pictures with you. I think a porch railing and hanging basket and window boxes will do the trick just nicely..You might want to whip those up..and that will do wonders.
ReplyDeleteI love the dresser as well! Just wondering how it stood up to the elements prior to relocating it inside. Did you line the draws with plastic to protect them when watering? What a welcoming idea.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful everything looks.
ReplyDeleteI came by to visit and was pleasantly surprised to be featured over there in your sidebar. I am so honored and wanted to say Thank You. xo Joan@anythinggoeshere
Thank you for the sweet compliments on the garden dresser and our little house.:) I am definitely going to be on the lookout for another and I hope those of you who also want a garden dresser find one of your own soon!
ReplyDeleteThat is just the cutest porch ever! If I had a dresser on my porch I think my HOA would have me arrested! ;}
ReplyDeletem ^..^
Your house is so cute! How about some white gingerbread trim on your front porch? Nothing says cottage like some frilly woodwork!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog so much, and your home looks so cozy and welcoming. Thanks for sharing your cottage journey with us!
