Tea, Anyone? {Thoughts about Blogs}

I've decided that since it's the beginning of a brand new year, I should try to start tidying up and organizing around here before moving on to more house projects, especially after SO much seemed to pile up during last month's room renovation.  {Oh my - it's pretty bad around here right now. Why am I just sitting down?!  Ah.  Why not. :) } While I *do* need to some major cleaning and decluttering around the house like I did a while back in the kitchen...

Whew!

...what I also really need to work on is blog reading organization.

Back in the day when I began blogging, there were very few house blogs out there, and I remember searching and searching for other cottage or farmhouse lifestyle blogs, but I couldn't find any.  I know there had to be a few out there, but I was just unsuccessful at locating them.  Now, there are so many wonderful and inspiring blogs!  It's a beautiful thing!

However, as our last project showed me {again}, I get overwhelmed very easily and have a tendency to become paralyzed, not knowing where to start first.  I don't even have a method for keeping up with blog subscriptions and today, for the first time in forever, I explored Google Reader.  It looks like it should be a great way to keep up with favorite blogs and to find new ones.  But somehow, it had oodles and oodles of blog subscriptions in it, I suppose from my years and years of subscribing to various blogs through Blogger.   {Have I mentioned how much Google, with all it's acquisitions and partnerships with other sites, completely confuses me?} Anyway, there were 1000+ unread updates in my Google Reader.  Ugh.
I would really like to get back to keeping up with old friends {old as in...well...you know what I mean, right?} and subscribing to blogs that truly make my heart smile.  A post written recently by Angela of Cottage Magpie really got me thinking. We all blog and read blogs for very different reasons and that's okay.  Here's a snippet of a comment that I left on Angela's blog the other day...

" I think a lot of readers do appreciate simple, ‘no bells and whistles’ blogs because it DOES feel like visiting with a friend over a cup of tea as opposed to maybe visiting a friend that is hosting a large party where there is lots going on. There is nothing wrong with either atmosphere, it’s just that we all have our preferences, both as bloggers and blog readers."

What I'd  personally love to have in my tidied up, newly organized Google Reader is a list of blogs in which I feel that I am truly "visiting" with friends over a cup of tea - catching up with their thoughts, ideas, projects, and so on.   Does that make any sense? I hope so.

So, that being said, I'd love any of your recommendations, your personal blog favorites.  Are there ones that just make you feel good when you visit?  Ones that especially inspire you or make you think about something deep or make you happy? Or if you have thoughts about blogging in general, the kinds of blogs you enjoy, or what you look for in a blog before you 'subscribe', please share!

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend, friends. :)  Hopefully I'll get around to attacking some more literal post-project-piles around here - but it's probably not going to happen today!

I'm very happy to read your post today and I enjoyed my time here. It was welcoming, quiet and you were writing about how you Feel and that's what I like. Real folks and their real feelings without too much glitz and the constant 24/7 running commercials.

Kim, I too read Angela's very thoughtful entry on her blog, "Cottage Magpie" the other day. I understand what you are saying! I am certain that I have been one of your earliest followers from way, way back. I have always loved your blog. Yes, it is amazing how blogging has changed over the years. There are, indeed, so many today from which to choose for our reading pleasure!

But it has also become a highly competitive world out there! I am a very low-key blogger. I hope that people visit now and then, but I blog very much as a personal journal. I am always trying to find new blogs to read that fit that certain niche that I love. I like to read about how people renovate and fix up their homes on very modest budgets (and lots of elbow grease.)

I often look at what blogs a favorite blogger has listed in a sidebar and check out those blogs to see if they are something that interests me. Often that is a wonderful way to find new, inspiring blogs. I recently discovered "FARMHOUSE 5540", a blog about renovating an old PA farmhouse. I also discovered, "Ripe Red Berries," a lovely blog about living a "stylish life on a shoestring" in Maine. I hope that other readers might pass on names of blogs that they like too, and that fit the simple farmhouse/cottage style that I love so much too. Wouldn't it be great to discover some new ones?

There are a lot of blogs I visit hat make me feel just like I am visiting with an old friend. I, too, like a simpler blog where there is NOT a ton of small print reading and where I can grab a smile (or an idea) leave a comment and go. Blogging faithfully is not for the faint of heart.

I try to keep my blog simple and just simplified everything (scary as it was for me to do techno stuff) and I feel like it is fresher and "cleaner". Kind of what I am going after with my whole life in this new year- Blessings and good luck- xo Diana

I don't use google reader anymore...I just read my own blog roll :) I'm paring it down right now. I also have a page on top of my blog with suggestions for each style of cottage blog, though many of those need deleted/updated.

I tend to group my blogs into the 'mega-bloggers' that I never even comment on, but reap great inspiration from (Lettered Cottage, Nesting Place, Perfectly Imperfect, etc.) and those who I comment on 'cause I like the tea they serve :)

My style is also ever evolving, and I'm weeding out those that are just pretty to look at, but not anything I'd do in my own house.

Soooooo....you can check my blogroll out for cottage/farmhouse ideas. I also like fresh, beachy cottage style, and a touch of shabby chic, a dollop of traditional and flea market. Those are the blogs I enjoy the most. I don't like trends, urban or modern (chevron and grey walls, whatever pantone says is the color of the year, etc.)

I'm heading back over now to clean out the blog roll and look forward to suggestions you receive here!

Yours was the first blog I subbed to, Kim. I have enjoyed it so much.

You are candid and such a pleasure to read. It made my adventures in remodeling less daunting.

I only receive blog updates if I can sub through email. Otherwise, they will not be checked.

My other two very favorites blogs are Pure Style Home and Between Naps on the Porch, simply because these ladies have a lot of class.

I sub to other blogs on fashion and art.

I completely know what you mean! I am growing weary of blogs that have endless parties and make you click and click and click just to get to the post you want to read. I know they all have their reasons for doing so, but it makes reading their blogs less enjoyable, especially if you are reading on a dinosaur of a computer. It takes forever for the pages to load! I really enjoy your blog, although I am not one to comment often. Another blog I recently found that I love is talkofthehouse.com. I love the way she writes and the pictures she shares.Btw, I started a blog but never took the time to figure out how to load pictures and things. Maybe one day.....

I've been blogging about 4 years and still prefer the "old school" blogs. I prefer seeing what normal people with normal budgets are doing to their homes. The million and one ads that pop up and slow down the pages get on my nerves. That said, I think it's neat that some have found a way to make some money along the way so I can't fault them for it.

I always loved your projects and the sweet little quotes you include along the way. Hope you do come back and blog more often.

Dear Kim,

You were the first blog I ever read and continue to read faithfully because I feel like I am visiting an old friend when I am here. And like a true friend, it doesn't matter how long it's been since we last got together, we just pick up where we left off. {Although I do miss you!}

I don't use google (Must be a Jersey thing; tell me I must do something and that's the one thing I'll be sure not to do! This explains why I must comment under Open ID.) So far it's not an issue.

Your Friend,
Deborah

Wow, I really appreciate all the suggestions! {and through the comments, I've been able to discover some of your blogs that I may not have known about before} It looks like you all share similar thoughts about blogs and blogging, so I know I'll probably enjoy your recommendations as much as you do. I do love the blogs on budget decorating and remodeling especially, because, well, that's what's taking so long with the Twice Remembered remodel - we're working with a budget that never quite seems to be big enough! Thanks for taking the time to share them with me!

I've known some of you for so long and it's always a joy to see you when you 'visit'. And some are new friends that I'm thrilled to meet for the first time. I look forward to seeing you again!

In other news, I got a few "piles" taken care of over the weekend and today. It's feeling better around here already!

Well, YOU KNOW yours was one of the first two blogs I ever found and that I ADORE it! :-D
I feel like I'm most drawn to blogs that lean a little more "lifestyle" than "DIY", and in addition to yours- I can't miss a post from Shannan at FlowerPatchFarmgirl.blogspot.com and Ashley at AshleyAnnPhotography.com/blog . Like yours, their stories and photos are like chicken soup for the soul!

Hey there Kim,
I first "met" you via the Cottage Living magazine forum many, many years ago, and have been one of your quiet followers since then.
This post really speaks to me, as I just recently made the effort to gain some control over all the blogs I read. As I've changed, so has my blogroll. My favs?
1: The ones that welcome comments and return for a visit back and forth, building true friendships.
2: Blogs that inspire and encourage others to try new things. I am a DIYer, work-in-progress kind of girl, and love blogs that share tutorials and inspiration.
3: Blogs that speak from the heart. Everyday, honest this is my perfectly imperfect life kind of blogs.
Since everyone loves different things, I won't recommend any blogs in particular, but I did notice that someone that left a comment here is also one of my all time favorite bloggers. :)
Thanks for asking us what we think, Kim, and Happy 2013 to you and yours!

Kim, I've been blogging since 2005, and only in the last few years has this "house blog" thing exploded into the advertising-driven beast that it seems to be now.

I've never enjoyed seeing some bloggers that I formerly liked to read decide to go full-on commercial. It feels like a friend you were getting to know decided to move...

I'm sticking with the blogs that are people doing their *own* projects, in their *own* words, and not jumping on every trend. :)
You were one of the first house blogs I started reading! I can recommend a Norwegian blogger who has a little cottage she renovated herself...I think it's called the Cottage at Vinnord

I don't have my own blog. Thought about doing one (would love to show off my projects) but not sure it could live up to all the wonderful blogs I read out there. Like many others, years ago, yours was the first I have ever read (thanks to your plank ceiling project). You have inspired me so much, as I am sure many others. I have come back so many times to browse your pictures I feel like you live next door.

So I just wanted to say !!!Thank You!!! for sharing, even if it is just once in a while. I will be here!

PS. I just set up my google reader also. Way too many talented people to follow.

Kim, The first blog I ever found was The Lettered Cottage. Before that I didn't even know blogs existed. The next blog I found was yours. Between these two blogs - I fell in love. My next two favorites are Our Vintage Home Love and The Old Painted Cottage. Through these blogs I found a decorating style I love. Eventually I found Flower Patch Farmgirl and I just love her writing style and how transparent Shannan is. Another blog I love is The Legacy of Home which is very different than other blogs I read, but I just love her heart. I prefer lifestyle blogs too, they are now my favorites. And I find myself drawn to blogs that share a bit of the writer's life and struggles so I feel like I can get to know them.
