Red Cottage Kitchen Vignettes and Hardwood Photos
Y ou all left such lovely comments in my last entry about our new hardwood flooring. Thank you! It was a backbreaking job as you may well know, but we are very pleased with how it turned out. I'm glad to hear that some of you have the same flooring and have been happy with it! For those of you who are eager to rip out your old linoleum or carpet, I understand! It will happen, and even if it takes much longer than you prefer to get to that point, it will be well worth the wait! {You'll be kissing your new floors, too, I'm sure!}
I was disappointed to see just how grainy the photos were in my last entry as I looked at them in theFor now, the kitchen is my playground. morning light so I rephotographed them and replaced them. I spent some time, too, capturing some little kitchen vignettes. {I know it seems like the kitchen is really the only place I photograph vignettes, but that's because the rest of the house is pretty much a great big embarrassing "before" that needs a lot of work still.} For now, the kitchen is my playground as far as decorating fun goes, though the studio is getting there...
Last week I shared with you some photos of the kitchen floor "surgery" we had to perform recently in order to prepare for the laying of the hardwood, along with some additional history about our kitchen. In short, I've been waiting for this flooring for a looooooong time.I feel like the hardest parts of the kitchen remodel are behind us It has been a slow, labor intensive journey getting to this point with our kitchen. We've been working on it little by little for over three years now, but when you're on a budget, slow progress is better than none at all, right? We still have to tackle the trim work, install/paint beadboard, and work on a few other small projects I've been dreaming about for a while, but I feel like the hardest parts of the kitchen remodel are behind us. We've knocked out walls to install windows and french doors, installed a new plank ceiling and lighting, added trim to and then painted our standard honey oak cabinets, installed a new countertop, backsplash, and faucet, replaced the appliances, and finally over the course of the last two weekends, laid the hardwood flooring.
Just about all the accessories you see in the photos came from Goodwill, yard sales, or the flea market. A couple of things were purchased from Ebay. I think my favorite recent finds are the old mortar and pestle {it was $1}, the cake plate and dome {$5!}, the antique cookbook {$1}, and the Morton's salt tin {.50}.
I hope you enjoy these random shots of our "kitchen in progress". Can you picture it with white beadboard around the entire perimeter? Can you picture the dining area with a fireplace? {More on that in the future!} Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas for this space!
First a "before":
And now a few million "afters":
I wasn't going to show you this side of the room since there are boxes of flooring stacked up, but I wanted to tell you that I'm making plans to put a fireplace on the wall that the map is on. The kids LOVE this giant, laminate map and they all want it in their room. One map, three kids sharing two rooms. That still leaves not enough map to go around. Hmmm...
And a before and after taken from the same angle. {Maybe there is potential for the rest of this house afterall?}:

WOW... I never get tired of seeing all your kitchen pictures... They are beautiful and it just gets me excited to see the rest as you do get it done... LOVE it!
~Whitney
Delightful! you have done an amazing job..for it to look like it did..to this which has showcased your personality..wow! well done!
Oh Kim! The floors look fantastic!
It makes such a difference in the look of the room, doesn't it?
Of course, your kitchen was already beautiful...but in our house, having the floors done finally made the room look "finished".
Great job!
Kimberly :)
That is a beautiful kitchen! My husband and I were thinking about installing hardwood in our kitchen. When installing hardwood in your kitchen, did you remove the dishwasher to install the hardwood or did you just install it around the dishwasher? I was worried that if we removed the dishwasher that it may not fit back into its little home!
Aw, thanks so much! About the dishwasher, we didn't run the hardwood under the dishwasher. Our dishwasher already sits upon a little plywood platform to make it just the right height for the counter, so we just butted the flooring up against the platform.:)
Your hardwood is absolutely stunning but I have to say the vignettes are my favorite pictures! I love looking at them. I can't do minimal accessories so it's wonderful to see someone else that loves to put things here and there, out on counters. Once in a while I clear my kitchen counters off and try to only put half the "stuff" back on. It never lasts long.
Gorgeous photos, you have a true talent for decorating and photography.
If you have a minute come check out my door on my blog. I would love your opinion.
~Michelle
Its all so beautiful!
Great pictures of your vignettes, Kim. They would make great notecards.
Thank you, dear friend, for taking the time I KNOW it took to take and proof all those BEAUTIFUL, INSPIRING photos. I really admire you and your work. Your home is such a sweet visual treat!
Layla
can't say enough how jalous I am.
can't wait to see it with beadboard.
and you got me really curious about that fireplace!
Love your new photos! And that you're so in love with your kitchen! It's really brautiful!
Is there a hallway wall near the kids' bedrooms that's large enough for the big map? Some other area they spend time in or pass every day? It's a great map... would be a shame to lose it... but a fireplace in the dining room is such a great idea!
Absolutely beautiful! Great job on the floor and I love all the vignette photos.
What a transformation! Just beautiful!
Oh wow!!! This is incredible. A stunning transformation! This looks like it should be in a magazine. You're a great photographer too! Well done! I'm sure you are super happy every single time you walk into your kitchen. :)
I LOVE your kitchen!!! We're fixing to move into a house with only painted subflooring for a while. I bet your new floor was well worth the wait. It's beautiful.
I can't even get over how gorgeous those red cabinets are! I love how bright your kitchen is, it's beautiful and kid friendly at the same time.
Thanks for sharing!
The floors just add the perfect layer of warmth into your lovely kitchen. Y'all did such a great job. Your vignettes never disappoint. Always a delight for the eyes.
"A great embarrassing before" - I love it! Sounds like my place. lol We are in the midst of remodeling our kitchen, too, so I understand - and think your kitchen is gorgeous! (Our cabinets are red, too.)
While I continue to be inspired by the entire kitchen (love the new flooring!) I am most inspired by the vignettes. I love how you pulled everyday pieces together to create little collections and 'eye candy'. You continue to inspire me to not be afraid to add some red accents in my home (a huge step for me post 80's and 90's pinks and mauves.) Thanks for sharing.
Wow...I'm in love!
I am such a fan of this style!
Gorgeous! Dreamy!
You are blessed!
And talented!
Absolutely beautiful and inspiring. I have been wanting to tackle my kitchen for the past 8years. And that chocolate cake looks to die for.
Kim, your kitchen is AMAZING! It could easily be in a magazine! And I am so excited for you that you finally got your hardwood floors~ they look gorgeous! :) It is just the inspiration I need this morning, as I go into my less-than-finished kitchen to prime bead board...I have more of your blog to catch up on but just had to tell you I think your kitchen with all it's lovely details looks perfect! I hope you have a wonderful day! :)
Such lovely photos, Kim! Would LOVE a piece of that chocolate cake...can you send me some!? LOL! You kitchen is SO beautiful!
Smiles,
Rachel
Your kitchen is amazing! I love red. It's very striking. Thanks for sharing all your pics.
Fabulous designs. I can't believe you are able to do all that with yard sales and goodwill items. The flooring really did the trick, didn't it. We should get together sometime. Just drop me a line at Furniture and Design Ideas. We can exchange design ideas for our blogs sometime.

I think I just OD'd on loveliness. Wow.
GORGEOUS! I just love it. And how do you get APPLES to look so good? I love the red everywhere, and the before and after comparison is one of the most striking I've ever seen!
We put hardwood floors in our greatroom (kitchen, dining and living room 15 years ago. It was a backbreaking project for my husband, two sons and I but 15 years later, they look like they were just installed yesterday. You are going to love them too.
Hugs,
Gretchen

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your kitchen. Your "before" photo looks a lot like my current kitchen. The red cabinets are beautiful, and I love what you did with the ceiling. GREAT job!

Ok. Ok.
I don't usually comment on deco blogs.
I love looking though.
And your kitchen vignettes.
The old frames on your countertop.
Am digging that idea.
Great job.
Sweet dreams.
I love what you have done. Your pictures are great and I can see how much heart and soul into this kitchen! Great job and looking forward to seeing more!
Michelle
You've done such an amazing job. It looks soo soo wonderful.
Every photo shot is magical. I love your new kitchen. Thanks for sharing, I love it! Marla
A fun transformation journey from the land of kitchen "drab" to "delightful and cozy!"
Your kitchen is aaaaah.maaaa.zing! Luuuuurve it! So much more personality in it now. The smaller glass dome with the slice in it is absolutely adorable. I love pretty glass things! I can remember drooling over my grandma's hutch, even as a little girl. Oh, and on a funny side note, I have a map on my dining room wall too! We homeschool, and the dining room couples as our schoolroom, so we have 2 maps, letters and numbers posters, and a write on/wipe off calendar! Not exactly artful, but they have to go somewhere!
I just found your blog. I will be a regular visitor. Your kitchen is amazing as are all your beautiful photo's. You've got my vote! Love it.
Lisa
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL photos!!!
It doesn't even look like the same house! What wonderful changes you've made! And you're the Queen of Beautiful Vignettes!
wow - this is just STUNNING!! I'm adoring all the little details....the chalkboard - the lacy tea towel draped over, the textures & softness of the baskets & silver. Just lovely. oh & the chocolate cake looks pretty yummy too - got milk?
I adore your red kitchen. It must just make your heart sing when you enter it each morning. I also really love your map on the wall in the dining area...!
Thanks for joining the party!

Stunning stunning photography! I'd be here all day if I listed what I loved. I love it all! And an equally glorious kitchen!
The reds and whites and woods with a touch of real life greens just look so fresh and beautiful. So different from what I have but in the most delightful way. You must LOVE living there. :)

I just wanted to drop you by a comment and say that I recently stumbled upon your blog and I cannot get enough, you have such a beautiful home full of amazing inspiration.
I have recently started to focus on a cottage style for our home, but we have a large looming red wall in our living room/dining room that it almost the same shade as your cabinets. I have never minded the wall but I was always afraid it was much too bold for the relaxed casual cottage feel I am after; my husband however loves it and would kill me if I painted over it.
You kitchen has shown me that natural wood, white furniture and accents and a cheerful dose of red can look amazing together. I am no longer worried about our red wall, and instead I embrace it as an outward symbol of our bright personalities. Thank you for sharing your beautiful kitchen!
God Bless, Melissa
THANK YOU! We decided to stain our cabinets red mahogany but with our gold tile floor and red brick backsplash I just couldn't visualize it. But after running across your kitchen photos, I can rest easy. OF COURSE! White as the accent color! I love your use of white pottery against the white brick, and the black and silver touches will help tie in our stainless appliances. Your cottage style and vignettes are just brilliant. I will use your photos for inspiration and, most importantly, I can finally stop obsessing! Thanks!
I just bought those same chairs. I live in Chapel Hill, Tennessee so probably 35-45 mins. from you. Did you buy your table from Rooster Tail in Franklin? I have a table very similar and that's where I bought it. I have enjoyed looking around!
What brand/color is the red cabinet paint? It's gorgeous and not overwhelming like some red's can be! Thanks in advance :)
Hi,I am new to your blog. I too have been trying to work up the courage to make the leap to red. My cabinets are primed and ready for color. I am wondering if you would share the brand and paint color as well as the finish of your cabinets. Also, did you do some antiquing to the red? Thanks so much!
