Some Important Blog News and Changes

I have some news for you. I wish it were happy and exciting news, but in reality it's the kind of news you put off telling because you hate to disappoint others. What is this all about?

I have decided to discontinue my weekly Make Your Monday link event. I've been thinking about this for a while, and now that I've had some time to consider all the pros and cons, I know that this is the right decision. I know you may wonder why, so I hope my explanation makes sense.

First and foremost, it boils down to a matter of time, or lack thereof. I visit all the links submitted each week, choose a few that really catch my eye {which is hard because there have been
Thank you all so much for your support with all the past Make Your Monday link parties!
so many great projects submitted!}, and post them as highlights each Sunday evening. Because of the volume of all the wonderful links submitted, sometimes this can take me up to 3 or 4 hours - or more! It really is a great problem to have, actually, but I'm afraid that when I honestly look at how much time I have available, there is simply not enough. For this month alone, I will be out of town for the next two Sundays, and who knows what summer will bring.

A secondary reason that I feel that this is a good decision is that there are just so many link parties in our blogging community right now, especially on Mondays. Again, another wonderful downside, but I feel better knowing that those of you who regularly link up to Make Your Monday will have somewhere else to submit your project links. Thank you all so much for your support with all the past Make Your Monday link parties - you made it a great success each and every week!

A Couple More Blog Changes

Within the next couple of months, you may notice a small change here at Twice Remembered. I've decided that after all of the contracts with my fabulous sponsors and other paying advertisers are up, I will no longer be displaying ads in the sidebars of my blog. I wanted to try a sponsorship program to see if it was "me" and though I think it could have worked well from a monetary standpoint, I feel that it isn't a good fit for Twice Remembered. I suppose my point is, I don't want to view my blog as a job where I must worry about and maintain traffic flow and visitor count and readership in order to truly do justice to paying advertisers. I want my blog to be the opposite of a job, in fact. I want Twice Remembered to be a respite of sorts for both visitors and myself.
Within the next couple of months, you may notice a small change here at Twice Remembered.
A simple place of quiet conversation over domestic affairs {and a large part of that happens to be our cottage remodel}. A "home" away from home to visit a couple of times a week, a haven in which to kick off the shoes and have a cup of tea or coffee - a quaint and cozy {tumble-down but slowly improving} place to relax without obligation or expectation. You will still see a few Google text links at the bottom of individual post entries, however not on the main page. I'm not ashamed to admit Google has been my "egg money" for years, a little something that I build over the months for extraneous projects. I've tried to put them in a tasteful, discreet location and I hope you don't mind them.

Just for fun, here are some home related goals for myself - and there is a point to this: cultivate a cottage style garden, grow a kitchen garden, get my business off the ground{!}, clean out and organize the attic, bake more homemade bread and other things to replace store bought versions, prepare better more wholesome school lunches {this has been requiring me to get up at 5:30am...but it's so worth it!}, decorate more cakes, improve my sewing skills, delve into photography a bit more, read more, take better care of myself, learn calligraphy, make room for letter and card writing {I still have to send those postcards out!}, more quality time with the family, make time for crafts, learn needlepoint {I ordered some really beautiful copies of antique patterns!}, have company over more often, and finally have that tea party I want to host for my elderly friends...That is just a partial list which doesn't include our many remodeling projects!

Here are my blog related goals: Do the things listed above, write about my experiences as I have time - once, maybe twice a week. Quality over quantity. Keep it cozy. Keep it quaint. Keep it real. Keep it simple.

In other words, maintain the cottage journal/journey type format that I began with many years ago.

I hope this isn't too disappointing for those that prefer blogs with frequent updates, but I've discovered that I just don't roll well that way. I can't keep up
I'm hoping that visitors here will come to view my entries as letters from an old friend - though not written daily, just as sincere and heartfelt.
that pace, live life, and be the person I want and need to be at the same time. I'm hoping that visitors here will come to view my entries as letters from an old friend - though not written daily, just as sincere and heartfelt. Blogging has opened up a whole new world for many of us, and just like you, I continue to try to find balance between it and actually experiencing life. I need more time to work on the cottage and to do all the things I've listed above, plus time to concentrate on priorities even greater than those listed. I hope you understand. :)

So that's about it - no new Make Your Mondays, no advertising on the main page when ad contracts are up, and once or twice a week blog posts.

Please feel free to share with me your thoughts on blogging and finding just the right balance. I'd love to hear from you!

Speaking of hearing from you, many of you had a few questions regarding my last entry yesterday about our beadboard progress. I will sit down and address those this afternoon {off to read to some second graders and to take my little one to the doctor now!}. Thank you for all your nice comments about our beadboard!

Have a beautiful Friday, everyone!

  1. Good for you! It should be a fun thing! I know many times it gets in the way for me and I have to step back and really reassess what I am doing.

  2. Good for you for doing what is best for YOU. Blogging takes up a lot of my time as well, and I'm just a recreational blogger. Some mornings, I spend over an hour just catching up on all the new posts of all the blogs I subscribe to. Something's got to give at some point, so maybe you'll inspire someone else (like me) to just keep things simple. And use our time for what really matters in life. :-)

  4. This is a perfect decision on your part...in fact, you've answered some issues I've been tossing around about my blog. I've found that blogging really is like a job that takes hours out of your week, something I've questioned a lot lately. Blogging should be fun, but on your time, and not what others expect of you. I should really take that last sentence to heart! Thumbs up on your decision!

  5. That is wonderful Kim! It's your inspiring blog and you should be happy, comfortable and have fun with it. Don't worry about a thing with the link party. You are right there are just so many around blog land.

I have been asked many times about advertising on my blog and I am just not interested for the very reasons you stated. It's just a fun and creative outlet for me and not a job per say. I only post 6 times a month and always have. That is all I can manage. Time is precious and we should all cherish it to the fullest.

    Blessings to you my friend.

  6. You need to do what's best for you and your family, Kim. With the nicer weather upon us, it is important to get out and about; and sometimes just take care of life in general.

I hope you are also finding time to use that great studio of yours, too!

  7. It's great that you can be honest with yourself about what you need. I just stepped back a bit as well and I'm only posting once, maybe twice a week. I need the breathing room and to spend more time with my family. We'll all be here to read when you post!

  10. I think that's a great decision, chickee. I see many blogs that are nothing BUT ads and personally, it turns me off. For me blogging is an online journal to provide a respite from the world we are living in at the moment—harried, hurried and not so nice sometimes. Ooooh, don't get me wrong, I love living but I think we all need just a bit of "down time" from the stresses of every day living once in a while and that's what I've tried to provide on my blog. I'd love some extra money also, but I don't want to do it at the expense of ads all over the place. I like to know that if someone recommends something it isn't because they've been paid to do it, that it truly comes from their heart or experience with it. I'm so happy you made this decision although I don't think your ads were obnoxious in any way, sweetpea. But I love to read the blogs about people's lives, home fixes, crafting and such. Personally, I NEED the time to peruse them daily and relax. Yours is one I enjoy perusing. The whole set-up is lovely in my opinion.

Also, it's the most important thing in the world to stay close to family and you can NEVER make a wrong decision in that regard. Good show, sugar!!!

    xoxo,
    Connie

  12. What a weight lifted off of you, right? It's nice to see someone do what they want and need to do. Blogging is so addictive that you can easily spend HOURS daily lost in them. We all know and understand. I, for one, am extremely happy for you. Keep it fun, not a job. Kudos to you, my friend!

  15. I am happy for you and your decisions. I sometimes make jewelry and have been asked to sell it and I always decline because I never want it to feel like a job. There are so many things in this busy world of ours that keep us frazzled and stressed while consuming our precious time. I agree with you that blogging doensn't have to be one of them. I am glad you will continue to share your progress and thoughts and happy for you that you have made a great decision.

  16. Whew! At first I thought you were going to say, "I'm closing down my blog." Kim, I think that what you have said is how many people feel about blogging. Always be true to yourself first! That's my motto. If blogging loses its pleasure, and it feels like a lot pressure, then it is truly time to reassess. Your blog entries are so delightful and obviously take time. I'll be happy to stop by once or twice a week to see what's happening at the best little cottage in Blogland!

  17. Totally understand, and good for you. It is so easy to get carried away with the amount of time you spend on a blog. I a, glad that you are putting yourself first. :)

  20. I think this is a great idea. I've known you since way back on the HGTV boards a couple (few) years ago, and your party was the first one I linked up to! But you're right, your blog has lost some of the intimacy it once had, and I think this will help bring it back.

  22. Kim...I so understand this! I am a faithful follower and regardless of how often you post, I will be here to read and take in when you do.

I found that when I had to break for our move and only posted once a month, the people that love you and enjoy your blog are still there anyways. I did lose a couple of followers, but I decided that the ones who understand and like to visit are the ones I want to stay. :)

I too am one who has decided I will never do any sponsors no matter how big my blog may get and I have had to turn down offers. I don't want to be a walking advertisement. I want my friends to come and be welcomed as if they were in my home. Blogs that are over commercialized are a turn off to me and I think you lose the personal touch. We have so much in common. ;)

I just post when I can and again...quality over quantity. I never want to post just to have something there.

Take some time for yourself and let this blog be your creative outlet that gives us a peek into your life to share with you.

I have decided I am not trying to run with the big dogs, but just trying to do what is best for me and hope that others might want to go along on my journey.

    Hugs and love friend!

    Victoria

  25. I think thats a very wise and level-headed decision. I dont worry about posting everyday, there's just no way I could do that. Sometimes it's once a week, sometimes twice. I still enjoy it very much and my readers enjoy seeing what's new whenever that might be. I believe that my family comes first. I wouldn't want to be chained to my computer every spare few hours I might get. Enjoy your new found freedom! I'm sure your summer with be extra special this year!

  27. I've only recently known of your blog and I do follow it...I have your button for the Cottage Charm Giveaway on my sidebar. Is that event still taking place?

The only way any of us can know for sure how we want to approach our blogging is to try something to see how it fits...you've tried and now making adjustments...nothing wrong with that at all.

There are tons of link parties as I've recently discovered. ♥ My goodness there are some 'super women' out there..haha I wish I had the energy level that some of them possess...but I don't so I'll watch them run at 100mph all day plus take care of their family. :0)

Thanks so much for reading my comments and I'll continue visiting...drop by my place when you have a moment.

    Have a wonderful day...

  28. I think about your tiny flower post in the midst of the big overpowering ones all the time. Don't be afraid that you'll become a small flower in the midst of all this. I commend you for taking time away from the "virtual world" and making time for the real one. When I first started feeling like I was in neck deep of trying to keep up with blogs, facebook, e-mail, etc...I decided to start a "technology free" Tuesday once a week to not do any of those things. It was such a freeing feeling of not having to keep up. Although, I don't do that now, it really put things into perspective and in order of importance for me.

  29. You live your life for you not for others. Blogging should be the same. Do what makes you happy!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Like you, I struggle hard to maintain a balance between blogging & "life". One of my decisions was to quit the blog parties like your Make it Monday. I just don't have the time to visit everybody, don't want to leave any one out & what's the point of going to a party if you're not gonna mingle. ;o)

I'm w/ ya on the advertising as well. I don't see my blog as a paycheck (thank goodness... it's not worth much! LOL but I have received a couple of offers to post a link in exchange for a free gift that I turned down) anyway, to be honest, I get a little turned off by the blogs that do have ads. I mean, it's entirely their right, it's their blog but I prefer a cozier, more intimate feeling from my blogging visits. If I visit a blog w/ ads it's like hanging out on Martha Stewart's website... it's interesting & full of lots of ideas but not really conducive to forming a friendship...ya know?

Hope you & your's had a wonderful Easter...your hallway looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think this is such a healthy attitude you have toward blogging! It should be enjoyable and not focused on things that cause stress, there's enough of that in our "real" lives. The link up parties do get stressful even for bloggers like me who just participate so I can imagine how stressful it has been for you trying to keep up!

I also have Google ads so yours don't bother me at all. You will remain on my sidebar and I will stay as a loyal follower just because I love your blog, regardless of how much or how little you update it:)

  33. I agree with Victoria "the people that love you and enjoy your blog are still there anyways", no matter how many times a week you blog.

When I was just beginning to blog last year, I wanted to grow and have a blog like all the 'biggies' I admired. But I have learned that it is best to do what you enjoy and what works best for you. As women (and the men too) we wear many hats and it is best to try and find a healthy balance.

I'll be here, enjoying your blog, whenever and with whatever you post.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I am a longtime reader of your blog. I totally understand trying to find balance as to how often to post. I also have kept away from advertising. I've had offers but it just doesn't fit me. My blog is about my life in our little cottage and I want it to be personal and welcoming.

I must admit I get a wee bit turned off my blogs with lots of ads. They seem to become too slick and I lose interest. That being said, I also understand why some bloggers need to have advertising.

    Anyway, good for you!

  35. Hi Kim -

When I read the first sentence of your post, I thought oh! my, no she is going to stop blogging and I got really upset and then as I continued to read and found out it was just the link party - I was so relieved. I love your blog and everything you write about. The fact that you are standing up for yourself and beliefs is why I love you and your blog so much. You don't follow the crowd, you are what I call- a true original. I am happy for you and since I get your blog in my reader I will never miss a post no matter how much or little you post. Kudos to you, Kim.

  37. Hi I jumped over from Martha's blog and read every word of your post. You are making the right decision, although I may not be the one to tell you that as I have never been here before. I have been blogging for about a year and I love all the comments people leave and I love hopping around from one blog to another when I have the time. I sometimes feel bad that I don't post that often and don't have that many followers but then I found out about two friends that read my blog faithfully and never commented, my blog had strengthened our friendships and I didn't even know it. I do take lots of time off because life is busy and I have learned through great loss that you only get one opportunity to do some things in life so make sure you take it. May you be blessed and encouraged by your open honesty and new truths! Blessings to you Meg

  44. This post was extremely timely for me, as I just started blogging this week. I am shocked at how much time it takes, and in the few short days since I've started I must admit to neglecting my husband to work on the blog. We actually had a tiff about it and I am so ashamed! I feel as you do about ads in blogs, it's just not me. I will have to weigh carefully how much time I want to spend on this, as I can see how easily it can eat up your time and make you miss the really important things, (like spending time with hubby). So thank you for this post, I love that you are being true to you...hope I can do the same.

  45. Hi Kim. I am a long time reader of your blog, and I have always loved it! Your writing style makes me feel like I am your best friend, and of course I love your home improvements. In fact, your blog is the first cottage style home decorating blog I ever read, and you are the one who got me hooked! This was two years ago, and I had only two or three blogs in my blogroll, now I probably have fifty!
Anyway, I love the way your blog was before, and I will always be a faithful reader! All the goals you have set for yourself for the future are so great! Can't wait to read all about it!

  48. sad to see your party go but completely understand! Your blog should be what you want it to be and not what others want. I've only had a blog for a short time and can easily see how it could takeover your life. That's not what it should be about. Good for you!

  49. I know it's hard to back off... but it's good to know that others out there feel the same thing. Blogging can take up too much "life". I find that if I'm not careful, I can spend more time on the computer than living my own life. That's totally not the point for me... I want blogging to just be a journal of sorts- also a way to connect, obviously- but not the actual "living" of my life. Good for you! It takes some soul-searching, I'm sure, to come up with such a decision. I think I've come away from this post a little inspired & refreshed. Thank you!

    Blessings!

  50. I am actually quite envious! I work (not on my blogs, but outside of that) 60+ hours per week (luckily from home) just to keep up on the bills with hubby's work being so slow. Oh my gosh, everything you said, I wish I could say it out loud! I want so badly to be able to quit those jobs and just be me, create, bake, cook, garden, enjoy my kids, etc. Good for you, I don't know you personally, and I only discovered your blog this year, but everything you said really hit home. It makes me happy that others can do what I eventually want to, it gives me hope! I'll be watching your changes, good luck!

  51. You know, I have only been blogging for a short time and know what you mean. I think by definition many of us bloggers are "over-achievers" otherwise we wouldn't be "doing" and blogging, so it can get to be more of an obligation and less fun. I'm confident you will find a good balance for yourself :).

  56. I think those are great decisions you've made regarding your blog, and I support you in them! I have enjoyed blogging for the past year so much, but I realized from the start how much time I can devote to it, so I wanted it to be my "happy place" and hoped it would be that for others, too. I also encourage and support those who spend a great deal of time on their blogging business, but what's right for one person might not be for the next. I'm excited for you that you've made decisions that are good fit for your blog and yourself!

    Take care!

  58. I'm sure you've gotten lots of supportive comments today already, but here is mine: I started my blog as a fun way to document all the projects I do since I love to be creative... but right away I started to put pressure on myself to get more subscribers and grow the blog... and I have to continually remind myself why I am doing it in the first place. Sounds like you are doing that too and I think it's great!! :)

  60. I completely understand about discontinuing the party. I don't even have time to participate anymore let alone host something like tht.

As far as advertising, I struggled with the same decision as I was approached several times but ultimately decided to be ad-free and I am so glad I am. I've taken blog breaks when I'm busy and I think I'd feel pressured to continue if I had sponsors. It remains something fun which was why I started in the first place.

Love your blog - ads or not! ;-)

  61. Change away, my Dear! Our blogs should be exactly as we wish them to be. I'm so happy for you, that you are doing these changes.

  62. I want to thank you for sharing your life. You have no idea how similar we are...sometimes I read your blog and think, my! she lives in my home! I too live in a "shabby" neighborhood and so miss the beauty of pristine yards of the east/southern parts of the country. The SW is very different.
You have been an inspiration to me. I have become more creative (again) and am working on our home. I love the warm touches that have been inspired by you. I was recently diag with stage 3 cancer. I immediately become very creative and love to see what you are doing. Thank you! Best of everything in this next phase. Take care and thank you for reminding all of us to use what we have, to appreciate all that God has given us to use. We are all gifts and have been given many talents. 64. You go, girl! The world is too commercial as it is and life is too short to do things that you really don't want to do. This is your blog and you should do with it what YOU want. Your explanation was beautifully written and I'm sure everyone that truly cares about you and about real blogging will understand. Be proud of yourself...I sure am.

  65. Bravo!!! Too many blogs change after becoming a bit more "business-y". They are less fun to read. The blogs I love best all seem to be written just for the fun of it.
