Day 3: Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Challenge
Another day glued to my cabinets:) I got the second coat of red on the top and bottom cabinets and the first coat of red on four doors. All of the shelves have received two coats of red.
I can see that one of my biggest challenges is going to be finding space to work on all the doors. Currently, both our island and dining table are our only work surfaces. The table holds the shelves, the island has enough room for four doors. The paint dries to the touch within an hour, but not dry enough to turn the doors over and start on the other side. It looks like I'll be doing just one side a day (and remember, I'm doin four coats...) So I'm still trying to figure out the logistics of it all. More than likely, I'll probably set up some sort of work area in the garage so that I can do a side on all the doors each day. After a couple more coats are on the shelves, I can move them off the kitchen table and put a few more doors on their. The kids don't mind eating in the living room:)
Another thing that is driving me bonkers is trying to paint in both horizontal and vertical directions on the top and bottom cabinets. It's been a nightmare trying to paint in such a way that brush strokes don't show. Plus, if you start to overwork the paint at the corner or if the brush isn't wet enough, the brush just drags across the paint leaving hideous...drag marks. You have to work really quickly, especially when it's relatively warm inside, because the paint starts to dry pretty fast and can start going gooky on you. If I were a cursing girl, my cabinets would have heard an earful today.
Before I put the second coat on the cabinets, I went through and distressed the edges. I'll do this between each coat so that I don't have four coats of paint to sand through...(click to enlarge)
Here is what the cabinets look like with their second coat of paint:

So, that's it for today. Tomorrow I have a meeting at school and then an art show/exhibit at the school, so I probably won't be spending too much time on the cabinets tomorrow. I'll probably at least put another coat on the shelves and flip those doors for another coat:) Another thing I plan on doing tomorrow is cleaning and sanding down more doors and have them ready for priming...
Happy Thursday, everyone!

Are you using oil paint or latex for your cabinets? I'm guessing latex because your drying times aren't too long.
Keep up the good work and get that card reader soon so we can ooh and aah over the lovely kitchen.
Yeah, I'm using latex. I know that oil based is suppose to be much more durable, but the fumes really make me sick if I'm around it a lot. I didn't get sick too bad when I did my ceiling fan, but earlier in the year I helped with a school mural once a week for about three weeks (painting it in...not drawing it, lol)and I was sick for weeks afterwards. I think the toxins build up in my system and I don't get rid of them like I should. So I've opted for several coats of latex. Always a trade-off, lol.
I'm planning on picking up a cheap card reader tomorrow. Until then, I'm taking pictures in between coats:)
Hey Kim ~ I dont recall what the doors look like. Mind posting a pic of them? Even if unfinished?
Getting a little done at a time is at least progress!
And I know what you mean about fumes...one time I was painting Kilz, the oil based, in a corner on a cold damp morning. I started to get such a sick, more like icky feeling about me, and my ears were ringing and I felt light-headed. It was strange. I am much more careful with oil based paints now. =) I so didnt like the FEELING that overcame me. Yuck!
Hi Jessica! Yeah, aren't the fumes the worst?! Ugh!
I went back and posted a photo of the doors in this entry:)
I'm really enjoying watching your progress from afar!
Having painted cabinet doors in summer, let me advise you to set up a station and get started soon, before it gets any more humid. There is nothing more agonizing than to have painted one side, dried it thoroughly, flipped it over to the underside...and then learned that the front side has glued itself to your worktable.
Good luck!
Hey Meredith! That is very good advice. I learned that the hard way with the coat of primer I put on the shelves. Now, though, when I flip the shelves and doors over the next day to paint the other side, I make sure I rest them on a soft cloth...so far there has been no *stickage*!
Thanks for tip and for dropping by!
I'm glad I found your blog...your kitchen is going to be just beautiful!
It's looking great! Keep on going, Kim!
THank you, Denise!
Oh your kitchen is beautiful! Compared to mine (dull as dishwater- grey!) it is a dream!
