Decoupage Goodness

Decoupage. I love it! After my last project that involved decoupaging, I believe I've convinced myself that I want to use old book pages to actually cover some walls. I'm thinking the bathroom, above nice, tall beadboard wainscoting. I mean - look how charming it is!

I really like this nostalgia invoking wall from Cut and Keep...

How about decoupaging a piece of furniture? Miss Sandy at Quill Cottage decoupaged this bookshelf beautifully...{Check out her site for a great step by step tutorial!}

Or what about a ceiling? {Common Ground}

Or even your shoes?!

Do you decoupage? I'd love to see your projects!

Those are all great ideas. I love decoupage. I just made my mom letters that spelled out "Nana" for Christmas. I didn't even think to take a pic. They were large chunky letters and I used 4 different coordinating papers. they came out really cute, she loved them.

Kim,

Loving words as I do, I LOVE the wall. However, spending a good amount of time removing wallpaper in this house, I wonder what removal would entail. Will hold up to water, steam, dampness in a bathroom? My other concern would be yellowing (unevenly) and cracking if a certain spot is exposed to direct sunlight.

When I was in college, my room mate and I took a phone book and "wallpapered" (aka taped)our dorm room wall! It was a free project and added something new to a cinder block wall! I'd say go for it... Dee Dee

Love your decoupaged stuff! And best of all... another use for old books and sheet music that would otherwise be part of the land-fill.

Very inspirational; thank you!

I think it's a great idea to do it in a bathroom ~ you'll always have something to read then! : )I'm so glad you are bringing back the Make Your Monday link-up. You had stopped it at the point that I found your blog. I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks, all! Deborah, I read that to decoupage walls, you would need to prime the walls with wallpaper primer or backer just as you would regular wallpaper so that it would be easier to remove. I would also need to apply a sealer over the decoupaged paper to protect it from moisture;) Personally, I don't really mind uneven spots but we don't have any windows in our bathroom, so no sun damage issues. Those were great questions!

I love decoupage as well. I have a stack of old books just for that. One of my favorite projects that I did was decoupage my selfmade dress-form.

Kim,

Thanks for addressing my concerns. After researching, I say go for it, girl friend! I am saving this idea for one wall in our future office. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kim,

Happy New Year and welcome back! Great post! Last Christmas, I decoupaged ornaments for the tree. You can see them here:

Decoupage is such a no brainer and so forgiving. It is impossible to mess up.

I didn't know any better (4 days ago, haha) when I did mine. I didn't do anything but paste and stick it up there. But, when the time comes that we are tired of it, the paneling will be taken down with it (so, in like 40 years;) ) Mine is exposed to sunlight at certain times so we'll see how it holds up... but I'm with you, I like a little weathering to it :) I already need to paste down a few corners that didn't get attached as well... and the spot where the kitten decided to attack. But that's a 10 minute fix.

I'm glad to see the one with the bookshelf. I've also been thinking about doing this to the shelf where we have our tv downstairs. It is a bit deep and pretty dark. I thought this might help to lighten it up. And since it is so deep and dark, you might not be able to tell what it REALLY is.

Another idea--- I always check for books at yard sales; you never know what you'll find. I have an old Alice in Wonderland with great pictures. I think it would be good to do something like this for a little girl's room. Maybe put it in a frame or something if the room couldn't "handle" that much book wallpaper :)

I remember when I was a girl my parents bought a house that had a little half-bath (no tub or shower) off the kitchen. My mom was horrified that it was wallpapered in a black and white print of female nudes! She took the stack of Sunday comics that she always saved for wrapping paper and decoupaged the walls and ceiling with them. Voila ~ built-in bathroom reading material!

While I was unaware of the term "decoupage" until now,
I've seen some walls that were made using the technique, and most of them were looking fabuluos!
If you are planning on doing decoupage in your house, you might wanna check out some other forms of 'book arts' as they could give you some inspiration for your decoupage project. Also, if you live near NY, you might wanna check out a used book store called "Strand" in NYC. Or you can check out their website at www.strandbooks.com -- they have great collection of old, as well as new, books.

I'm totally inspired by your super cool shoes and want to make my own. Can you actually wear them? I'm not very experienced in decoupage, so I must ask what you use to seal the shoes. Do they wear well, or do they get a crease along the toe line? I'm really keen to try this, but am worried that the shoes aren't really wearable, that they'd be really stiff and uncomfortable. Please respond. Thank you, JR

A very long time ago I remember seeing a Home Decor Magazine, with an article on a New York Loft Apt. The owners couldn't save the hardwood floors so they decoupaged the floor with sheet music. It looked spectacular.
