Day 5: Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Challenge
Wow - I almost forgot to post today. I'm heading to bed now but just wanted to say that I now have three coats of red paint on the cabinets and we put on another coat on the four of the doors and all the shelves. The shelves just need another coat on one side and they will be ready to be lined and installed.
Hubs and I were going to clean/degrease and then sand the remaining doors while watching a movie this evening, but I ran out of degreaser on the first door...grrr! I have to stress the importance of thoroughly cleaning your cabinets and doors before painting them. Our oak cabinets *looked* nice and shiny and clean, that is, until we sprayed them with degreaser. When I cleaned the base cabinets two or three weeks ago, I sprayed tons of degreaser on and let it just sit for a minute. It was so gross watching what started to stream down the cabinet and puddle on the floor. Just yellowish brown...grease and dirt I guess! I'd scrub it down and then spray again and the same thing would happen. I just kept doing this until the stream ran clear. I don't know how the people who lived here before us cooked, but the only thing we every fry once in a while is bacon or sausage, and that's maybe twice a month at the most. Where'd all that grease come from? Eww! Like I said, our cabinets looked clean...I guess oak hides dirt pretty well!
I think it takes just as long, if not longer, to prep everything for painting than it does to actually paint. I'm not looking forward to cleaning the rest of those doors, lol!
Tomorrow I plan on putting the fourth and final coat of red paint on the upper and lower cabinets and the final coat on the shelves and another coat on the four doors we're working on, and lastly, I need to set up a bigger workspace in the garage so that when the rest of the cabinet doors are cleaned and sanded, we can work on primiing and painting them. I need to pick up more degreaser, too.
I'll take some pics tomorrow...
