Cherry Red and Lime Green Cottage Kitchen???
Yesterday while tidying up the kitchen, I was looking at the color of some apple green/ lime green plates, cups, and saucers that I picked up recently at Goodwill. These dishes sat on the same shelf at Goodwill for a couple of weeks. I always oohed and ahhed over them, but because I had decided that I would paint my kitchen a softer, muted sage green, I knew the dishes really wouldn't match. When they sat at Goodwill for a while, I finally snagged them thinking I could use them somehow somewhere. They were very cheap and brand new - if I couldn't use them, I could find someone that could. But it was yesterday that I realized that this pretty lime green could possibly work as a wall color in our kitchen. Our cabinets are painted a shade by Waverly called "Cherry" and the colors really seem to work together.
I set up a few of the green dishes and some other cherry colored accessories I had to see how well they meshed together. For some reason, Sweet Pea the Cottage Cat thinks she's the only reason we ever pull the camera out, lol. I didn't have the heart to move her as she started drifting off to dreamland shortly after settling herself next to my color scheme. Maybe she's trying to convince me that black is the new white? Anyway, I'm thinking that the color looks great with my plaid curtain fabric and my red cabinets - not "minty" like the previous sage color I picked out. The yellow paint swatch pictured is my living room color, which is also in the plaid curtains.
So now I have to decide whether I want to go with a muted sage green, a darker browner/olive green, or a fresh apple/lime green. I'll probably be buying a quart or two of sample paints when we finish up the ceiling, much to my husband's chagrin (we have so many from past projects!).
Here are the dishes against a red backdrop. I got all those dishes, plus three other green cups that I didn't stack, for about $5!

You always find the coolest stuff at your Goodwill. Everytime I drop into the shops(2) near me, it's just junk.
Anyways, I think those colors look great next to each other and I love the green color of the dishes. I think it could potentially work on your kitchen walls. You may want to paint a large-ish section just to get a better idea of what it'll look like. I would just worry that it's a lot of wall that is painted green and all that green might just be too much. But, then again, it could totally work.
Hey there! Yeah, sometimes my Goodwill is like that, too. I may go weeks w/o finding anything.
That's a good thing to keep in mind about the walls. I will have white painted beadboard halfway up the wall, though, so maybe that will help:) I'm still going to paint a large area because you just never know till it's on the wall!
I wish my Goodwill was as good as I see some of you girls have out there. I check all the time and all there is is junk.
I think you should just try some samples on your wall but I think if you go with a sagey green that has a little yellow in it it will blend better with the living room. They have those cheap samples in most of the brands now instead of having to buy a quart.
Kim,
You love the same colors I love. Red and green are so beautiful together, and I admire your latest choice of shades. I really like the green in those cups you found. I agree with what Chris said about going with a little yellow in it. It is a little warmer and goes with the red better.
We are just about to paint our living room green (as soon as we remove the rest of the popcorn on our ceiling). We have been trying to get to this FOREVER, but Christmas got in the way. Then I have a plan one day to paint our kitchen cabinets red, similar to yours. That is down the road a bit, though. You can check out my blog if you get the chance at CasaAmada.blogspot.com.
I only go to Goodwill with an objective and try to stick with it. I have a list and I stick to it. Otherwise I bring home all sorts of stuff that makes me go "Huh? What was I thinking!" a few later. I guess I didn't inherit the treasure-finder gene. I never find goodies like you do. You will not have any trouble getting your shop going, and I wish I lived in Tennessee so I could visit!
I think those colors look lovely together and great with the fabric. I wouldn't worry too much about the living room - it's pale yellow and you have pale yellow in your fabric - that ties them together already. Go with the green you love - the shade of your dishes is lovely (and very cottage-y too.) Beautiful combo - have fun!
I think those colors are a perfect pair.
Just last summer my sister painted her living room three colors; Tomato red (I called it paprika), a mellow sunshine yellow and a lime-like green. It looks fabulous. She really has an eye for color. I think that you definitely do, too!
Also, those dishes are really pretty and I am amazed they sat for two weeks. In my neighborhood, they would have been snagged up as soon as they hit the shelf.
My kitchen is painted a bright green...we love it!! I used dark blue and lemon accents. I found a piece of stained glass to hang over the sink that has green and blues in it. I love what you have done and are doing. I love those dishes...good find!!
I definitely think you should go with the appley bright green. I think that is such a fresh, happy color. I love sage, but it seems like it has been really overdone, at least in some of my circles. I think the apple green is a fresh interpretation, especially with that beautiful red in your cabinets.
I am sure whatever you end up with will look amazing!!

Hi Kim!!
Cherry Red and Lime Green sound WONDERFULLY COTTAGY to me! Fresh and fun ~ love your new dishes and I can't wait to see what you decide.
xo,
Kim
Those dishes are very pretty, Kim, and the plaid from the curtain is just perfect with them. I think you should go with that color green. Something a little softer might last longer. Meaning, you might not get tired of looking at it. My humble opinion of course, but bolder colors do run their course more quickly.
Go to Lowe's and check out their Laura Ashley Pale Apple 2. It may be a little more "lime-y" than you're thinking, but I did my kitchen and dining area (all one big room) in Pale Apple last year and I am loving it! I have lots of red vintagey kiitchenware, and it all really pops against the green.
Awesome Goodill find, btw!
Kim~
I LOVE the dishes together and I think a brighter green would look great. Don't you just love Goodwill? People never believe what my husband and I find there! Can't wait to see what you decide.

Thank you so much for your comment on my blog! I totally love your style, the red colour is just gorgeous! I will definitely continue to read your blog! Love Anna from Sweden
Lucky lady! I think the combination of red and green is wonderful, but I think I'd go with the muted sage green. I tried lime green in my kitchen, and it burned my eyeballs out the first few mornings! Soon changed it to soft cream, I can tell you!
Thanks for stopping by my blog & commenting. It means a lot to me as I'm still new to this game.
I've loved hearing from everyone! I *need* this kind of help, lol - I have SUCH a hard time with paint - you just don't know! I keep jumping back and forth about the "Marsh Lake" (lime/apple) paint seen in the photos. On cloudy days it looks great. Yesterday was much sunnier and it seemed very bright, but I have to remember that only half the wall will be painted - the area above the white beadboard we'll install later. Plus, my brick backsplash will be white-ish, plus if I go ahead and do the brick wall beside the fridge I talked about last week. So all that white will help cut the intensity and balance things out. I'm thinking in the future, I'd like to have all white dining room chairs, and *maybe* paint my table legs a very surprising color like the blue I posted here. I don't know...THAT's going to take some nerve, lol!
I'm going to go out today or tomorrow to Sherwin Williams to look at their paint selection. I think there is a Benjamin Moore in a neighboring town, but if I can find something here locally, that would be great. When we finish out the trimwork for the ceiling and get all the nailholes puttied and the whole thing painted white, we'll need to paint the kitchen walls before we add the crown moulding. So I still have about a month to decide.
I painted a large sample of the color I originally picked out, Homestead Resort Parlor Sage, and it looks "ok", but I think I can find something better. Or at least I'm sure going to try!
I'm going to keep all of your thoughts and comments in mind and will probably buy a lime-y sample and a sage sample to try. I'll be sure to take photos for more opinions. I don't know why it is so hard for me to decide. This is bringing back memories of when I was trying to find the right yellow for the living room, lol! What a nightmare!
I want to also especially welcome all the newcomers to the site. How sweet of you to pop in and say hi! It's good to see all of you!
I understand how difficult it must be to choose what colour to have! They are all so beautiful, but the lighter one, lime-ish is so nice with the dark red!
The translator from to Swedish does work quite well, but you can totally write in English, since I and I think most of my readers will understand. And also, you won't have to go throgh the fuzz of translating. I'm very happy that you've found my blog, and I've found yours, it's so full of inspiration!
I think they are great and will look good in your kitchen.
Hi Kim,
If you're going to check out Benjamin Moore, take a look at Guilford Green HC-116. We did our kitchen that colour and I love it. Not at all minty and not glaring either. I call it "pistachio".
Love them! Love the color! I remember seeing these dishes and thought about getting them when they were at Target. Our Goodwill sometimes gets some Target products.
They are perfect. Great style. Great color.
Don't forget that some stores have the capability to color match to an object you bring in. You could take in a cup and they could match the color, make it darker, or lighten it depending on what you want.
Anna, lol, good! I'm glad you could read the translation...I had no idea really what it said, but I was hoping it was something close to what I meant for it to be, hehe! I think I'll just be the odd duck and comment in English from now on. Your country style and blog are just lovely!
Leona, thanks! I've found a color and today I'm going to buy a sample to test. *Hopefully* it will just as nice on the wall as it looks on the chip!
Anon, I'm going to keep that BM shade in mind. It sounds nice! I usually have to paint rooms a couple of time (at least, lol!) to find the right shade, so if this Sherwin Williams shade that I picked out Thursday doesn't work out, I'll check BM. I'm exhausting all my green options!
Kim! I was wondering where that dish set came from originally! I thought they looked familiar but I couldn't pinpoint where I had seen them before. We don't have a Target here locally so I don't get in there a whole lot. But there are rumors that we may get one soon!
Isa, that's a great suggestion. Honestly, it didn't even occur to me, lol, so thanks for bringing that up. I'm really loving this cheery green more and more, and if I can't find just the right shade I'm looking for, I may have to do that. Thanks!
They look fab-oo next to the cat. Can you get him to sit there always?
I love the color combination and I adore those dishes. I can't believe what a bargain you got on them. I used a Sherwin Williams Green called Hearts of Palm in my study that I just love. Jen
I love that color combo! So unexpected!
My cat Alistair also loves to pose for the camera. :)
Hi Shabby! Yeah, she loves to just sit there and I can hardly get her to move...it's like she knows I'm taking photos and she's posing, hehe!
Jen, I LOVE that shade! It's exactly what I chose!
Kristin, aren't cats so funny? They act like little divas, don't they?
Just wanted to say I absolutely adore your kitchen make-over! A couple of years ago, in a condo far, far, away, I decided to pair sage green with cherry red accents. When I told people what I planned on doing, they asked me if I was going for a Christmas-All-Year-Round look. When they saw what I had done, it all made sense! Red & green - provided they are the right shades, and tones - can be excellent together and your kitchen showcases that beautifully. And I love your beams!
