Kitchen/Dining Room Color + Ballard Design at Goodwill
Our kitchen and dining room have been primer green for a year now. I've had plenty of time to choose an actual paint color, and I thought at one time I did. I chose a shade called "Homestead Resort Parlor Sage" by American Tradition. We painted our daughters' room the same color. It's the shade on the very bottom in the photo to the left. But there are so many other shades that I like as well. By the way, the dark green shades you see are not an option...I just didn't bother to fold them back out of sight. My concern with the Parlor Sage is that it almost looks "minty" compared to the rich butter color of the living room. Why can't all colors coexist peacefully together? Why, oh why can't they all just get along?
Oh, and here are some of the same shades next to my kitchen cabinets. (Nevermind the drywall mud you see behind the swatches.) I need a shade that looks great with both the cabinets and the yellow living room. Decisions, decisions!
Some of you have written to ask about the current dining/kitchen wall color. The color is just primer at this point, but if you like that shade, I have found a couple of actual paint colors that are nearly the exact same shade as the primer. One is called Oak Moss and the other is a historic color called Jekyll Crane Cottage Green, both by American Tradition. Pick up a swatch and see if it might work for you. They're both really pretty:)
I've done a little Goodwill Hunting lately and found a few treasures. Here are a couple of them...
The other week I found this sweet little handpainted and crackled finish chest. Isn't it sweet?
About today's find...Just yesterday I was flipping through my latest Cottage Living magazine and was studying one particular photo of a kitchen. On the wall beside the island was a fabulous giant clock. I've always loved those big clocks but haven't considered buying one anytime soon because we're in the middle of a remodel and I can't really put anything on the walls now anyway. But I've always oohed and ahhed over them, none-the-less.
So imagine my surpise when I found the giant clock below at Goodwill today for just $12.99!!! It's not a cheapy clock, either - has a metal frame and is very heavy. It came from Ballard Design...here it is on the Ballards site. It still has it's original Ballard tag on the back- $289! I feel like I stole it, lol! The color itself is a little off for my color scheme but I may try to paint the metal frame a dark bronze color down the road.
So I just had to share my first thrifting deal of 2007! Goodwill is so much fun:)

Congrats on the Goodwill find! I bet the dark bronze will look fantastic.
try putting the swatches right on the buttercream living room wall and the red cabinets rather than beside. Sometimes that helps because there is a flood of contrasting color. And don't forget to compare at different times of day, too.
Wow. What a find! I can't wait to see how you use it.
And I would just echo your concern about the "minty" green wall color. I chose what I thought was a "celery" color for my kitchen and adjoining den and now I think it looks way too minty. I'm ready for a darker, olive color. Go with your gut...if you think it will look minty, you're probably right.
You win on the best thrift find of the year so far! As far as color goes-my kitchen and living room are a sagey green color and I went through probably 20 samples until I came across Ralph Lauren Pueblo. It has a bit of yellow in it so it doen't look minty. Everyone who sees it loves it and it seems to go with everything. I got it at Home Depot and when you see the color in the store (It's in the Naturals section of his paint chips) you'll think it's too yellow but bring it home away from the harsh lights there and try it. My island cabinets are stained red and the Pueblo looks perfect with it.
Good luck on the color choice. I find that is the most difficult decision to make for me! I'm still kicking around colors to redo my upstairs bedrooms!
I love, love, love your big clock! Great find. I've fallen in love with some pieces at Ballards and am especially taken with their rubbed black finish. My best friends hubby is an interior trim carpenter...he's up for trying his hand at making a copy of their London Low Console for me. I'll share if he actually follows through!
I know that you've been happy with the American Traditions paint, but I just wanted to share a recent experience that we've had. We usually use either Behr or American Traditions paint because Lowes and Home Depot are very convienent places to buy paint. However, we've used Benjamin Moore paints on the exterior of the house and have been really impressed with how much better they looked. Usually I don't go for expensive paint, but we decided to repaint the kitchen w/ Benjamin Moore and I cannot believe how much better it looks than the previous paint. The color saturation is better and while we used the same sheen (eggshell), the sheen on this paint really enhances the color instead of providing glare. It may be worth trying in your home on an accent wall, etc. to see how you like it. Good luck with the paint decision!
I'm one of those people who didn't realize that your walls weren't painted. So I guess I kinda like the primer color. I also second what Amanda said. Ben Moore makes great paint, with some lovely greens in their historical palatte.
oh I feel your pain. I had 6 swatches painted on my living room walls before I called a consultant from Devine Designs. I took the easy route. She came out, looked at my stuff, my rugs, my flooring and picked all my colors for me. Granted, she knew what I was going for. But then she even told me to paint what and where. Loved it. The best $150 I ever spent.
Kim,
I have been visiting your site for awhile now, but have never commented until now. I love all your ideas, and have been especially inspired by your kitchen makeover - we have dark, heavily-grained cabinets, and painting them is a goal for me for 2007! And I also love the beadboard on the ends of the cabinets - this is something I had suggested to my husband and was so pleased to be able to show him your photos of a completed job.
Regarding your kitchen color, it seems like our color schemes are very similar...we have a warm yellow (Martha Stewart, but I can't recall the name) in the kitchen/dining room, and an olive in the living room. We also have accents of red throughout. I love the warmth of this combination. I also painted the living room what I thought was a lovely green only to also find with a color that was too "minty". Then I used American Traditions "Homestead Resort Pale Olive," and have been very pleased with the change. Our living room is not the brightest room in the house, but this color does not seem too dark for me.
Thanks for all your photos, tips, and inspiration! Blessings,
Kris in PA
Thanks, everyone! And thanks for the great tips about the paint.
Patricia, it will be so easy to paint the frame. It just unscrews from the clock face so I'll be able to take it off, paint it, and screw it right back on! Sadly, the clock is going to be stored in my closet until "the dust settles" here. One day, ONE DAY I'll get to decorate this house! Now, I'd just be thrilled to have floors and blinds, lol!
Ben, I will try that. Maybe it will help me visualize the colors better. I'm having such a hard time with them...
Miriam, I'm trying to match some of the colors that are in my painting in the living room and there are lots of shades of green. Maybe I should try a tad darker and see if it's less minty. I'm not a minty kind of girl, lol.
Chris, I'd love to see a photo of your kitchen sometime so I can get a feel for that color. It sounds very pretty against red! Thanks for the idea:)
Poppy, that console sounds lovely! I really like the distressed black, too. Ballards is tres expensive, at least for me, but I know many of their pieces can be easily imitated for a fraction of the cost. Please do share your project if you have it done. It sounds really pretty!
Amanda, I've never used BM paints but only because - like you said - Lowes is just more convenient. But I've been thinking lately that maybe the reason I'm having such a hard time choosing one of the Lowes shades of green is because while all of them are pretty, maybe none of them are quite right for my space. I will look around and see if there is a BM dealer close-by. I've heard others say lots of good things about the BM brand. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hey Carol. Hehe, yeah, the primer has fooled a lot of people. If I've had to live with primer for a year, at least it's a decent color, lol.
Kim, sometimes I wish I could call someone in and nail these colors down for me! It's a job! Before we owned a house, I had all my colors picked. But I didn't take into consideration lighting. It can sure make or break a room redo!
Hi Kris! Thanks for visiting the site and for popping in to say hello:) You are going to have fun with your kitchen remodel (though you know there will be ups AND downs, lol). I have always, always loved and used the red/green/yellow color combination. I don't know what it is, but like you, I really like it. I'm not a huge fan of pastels though recently shades of bluish green and dark, saturated pink have been growing on me.
What color do you think you'll paint your cabinets? I'm exited for you...it will be a major transformation!
What a great find! Doesn't that just make your day?
We went through the same search for the perfect green for our bedroom & found one that we love--Behr "Rejuvenate"--did I spell that right? In any case, you might want to try it, because it looks great & we get so many compliments on it.
What a great find! At our Goodwill, there is a large group of people that hover by the donation doors waiting for the employees to come thru with the stuff. They POUNCE on everthing before you even have a chance to look at stuff. Not very fun.
Your red cabinets have inspired me. I'm thinking of doing the same to my wood stained kitchen cabinets. We have a butter cream wall, so I think the red would look really good. And dh is happy because this is a project I can do alone LOL.
Go for it, Paula! The prepwork is tough..lots of cleaning and sanding and priming - but the transformation will be amazing. Let me know how it goes!
Ugh about the donation people pouncers. That's so rude:(
AWESOME thrifting find!!!!! wowzers
I love those clocks too.
My 6 yr old just walked by and said about your kitchen,
"hey! pretty kitchen";)
Kim, I am so thrilled for you with your new clock find! That is fantastic! I know how excited you must be with this wonderful score! Love it!!!
Kim
I just found your site and I LOVE IT! I agree with Amanda - I love Benjamin Moore paint. We have a Lowe's and Home Depot within 5 minutes of our house, but I will drive the extra 15 minutes to the Benjamin Moore store. I have two historical colors in my kitchen and family room - Crown Point Sand and Northampton Putty. They are in the green family and I love them. I am also a little jealous of all your wonderful Goodwill finds. I go up to ours quite frequently and have never seen anything as nice as the stuff you've found. Way to go!
