Little Mud Pies (or "What Could Happen When You Paint a Chair Red")
If you have kidlets of your own, you may mind this entry entertaining. If you don't yet have any, consider this a "cautionary tale". I try not to write about my little ones on this remodeling blog, but I'll make an exception today...
We had a long but wonderful weekend. We were away at a two day Bible educational assembly. It was very refreshing and though there was a lot of sitting and listening involved, my little ones were all very well behaved. Monday was a very special evening as well because it was the night of our annual memorial of Jesus' death. The kidlets were good, then, too:)
By Tuesday, I was really tired and decided to use the day to mostly rest. I did get out and pull the weeds out of the landscaping beds hubs built for me a few weeks ago. Soon we're going to be filling them with more dirt and some flowers. While I was outside, I was mentally planning what flowers would go where and thinking about what a lovely job hubs did in building the beds. And then I thought about the fact that the little ones had been so good all weekend and how they would love the opportunity to do something out of the ordinary and fun. After school, I asked them..."Wouldn't it be fun for you guys to make mud pies with the old dirt in the flower beds?"
Ooooh, they were so excited! I told them they could use their plastic play dishes for their "pies" and decorate them with pebbles and wild flowers. They were thrilled! The old dirt in the beds was dry so I told them they could use the hose to moisten it a bit because, afterall, who likes a dry pie? While they "baked", I was headed to the backyard to paint one of our old ladderback chairs red - an easy project that I've been meaning to get to for a year now. (We're getting ready to have a big yard sale to get rid of things we don't use, so this chair was one of those use it or lose it items.) "Please rinse your feet and hands with the hose before you go into the house." Those were my only instructions.
It didn't take long to paint the chair...maybe about 20 minutes. As I headed to the other side of the house, imagine my horror surprise when I realized that I didn't have cute little pebble and floral decorated mud pies waiting for me, but a giant, messy MUD POND instead! I'm pretty sure my jaw hit the floor, lol. The kidlets were wading in the landscaping bed and the water was well above their ankles.Mud was *everywhere*...the house, the sidewalk, the window, the sunroom floor. They had apparently been splashing and bellyflopping in their newly created pond, too, from the looks of their clothing.
I admit, I was really irritated. But at the same time, the whole situation was hilarious (unbeknownst to them) and I just had to take photos to remember the day they made "mud pies". Even though I scolded them and they apologized, they told me they had so much fun wading in that flowerbed with the mud squishing between their toes.
And just so none of us will ever forget, I'm going to have this photo printed and framed...I've entitled it Little Mud Pies.
By the way, the pond waters finally receded this morning, thank goodness.

Oh wow, that brings me back. My sister and I used to have such fun playing in the dirt at my grandparents' house, making various "foods" from mud and chinaberries and monkey grass and asphalt slivers.
Dirt and water! Two of the cheapest toys around!
Looks like they had a grand time and the photo is adorable!
That's a great picture! It looks like they had tremendous fun and it'll be something they'll always remember.

lol...I fully understand your being upset but finding the humor in it too! Love the photo, they will be fun memories for you all to look back on.
Your "little mud pies" made me smile this morning. When I saw the barefoot photo, I thought how great it would be to frame it. I think it's wonderful you are doing just that!
Wonderful blog and delightful post!

That's sweet! Although clean-up can be a pain I think kids need to play in the dirt, they don't do it enough anymore, IMHO.
I really like the way you turned the crop black and white, it made a great picture!
Oh to be a child again (sometimes) and not worry about the mud. I did grin as I read your post. Love the mud pies photo.Been as busy as you sis.
Despite the mess I bet this is one of those days your kids will remember FOREVER! They'll be married with kids of their own and they'll talk about the day Mom let them make mud pies. My kids do that-they're 29 and 26 now!
When I was a toddler, my family drove from CA to PA to visit relatives. I was so young that I don't remember the trip at all EXCEPT for making mud pies at my cousins house. It was so much fun! I'm sure your kids will always remember their mud pie day! The photos are great!
Oh, I love that little mud pies black and white pic. Beautiful! Good for you for taking the time to realize that it was actually a good memory!
Oh, how cute! Yep, those memories are ones they will remember forever. And what a great pic to keep to remind them. You can blackmail with it one day..heeeheee.

Kids tend to do things on a grand scale don't they?! I had to laugh when you wrote about expecting pretty little pebbled covered mudpies. That's what I would have thought too, but that's decorating mommies for you, we even think of mud as neat and pretty.
Glad you captured the day on film, you will cherish it.
That is too funny! I love the black and white photo!
Hey Kim ~ I know its been a pretty packed week for us too. We moved Saturday, then Monday the memorial which we had about 144 in attendance and we only have about 60 for our congregation. Yesterday it snowed pretty hard during our shopping for today. Then today a week after moving we had our one day "Bible educational assembly". =) We still have to catch our two day somewhere since when we moved we fell into the cracks if you will. Back in Louisiana they hadn't had it yet, but in Kentucky they had it before we moved here. Too bad I couldn't have made it to yours, but then again we were moving that day into the old farmhouse ;)
I know what you mean about the kiddos and the mud. Looks to me they had a grand ole time playing!
Ya know I read an old article, 1860s/1870s about the healthiness of mud. Yep mud baths were thought by some from that era to be perfectly healthy and essential. So there ya go ;) The perfect excuse for playing in the mud!
Thinking of you ~ ta ta ~ Jessica
A day to remember, to be sure!
Hey, Jessi, that would have been so cool to meet up with you for an assembly! Maybe someday...Are you guys going to Louisville for the convention? We were assigned there years ago but it has has been Huntsville for a while now... It's good to hear from you - and that's neat about the healthiness of mud, hehe!
Sepia pictures are great!
