More Goodwill Thrills

You just never know with Goodwill. Some days, there is nothing for you there. Then there are other days...ah...other days that Goodwill has a special something just for you.

I've been on the look out for a large mirror lately to go on my old dresser that currently resides in my living room. I'm addicted to mirrors (though I don't always necessarily enjoy looking into them). As more of our house is completed, I need to spread them throughout our home a bit more instead of having a mirror concentrate in our living room. But back to Goodwill...

I was there on Friday, my usual Goodwill Hunting day, and I spent a great deal of time picking out a collection of vintage metal picture frames. I didn't realized how much I loved these little things. I want to use them for black and white family photos. I haven't decided yet if I'll leave them as they are or paint them all the same color. White maybe? Suggestions?

As I was about to checkout, I spied along the wall a beautiful, large, antique mirror! My heart skipped a beat! I made a dash for it and picked it up to put it in my cart (somehow)- it was so heavy! I couldn't believe the treasure I had just found. And best of all? It was only $12.99! I thought my eyes were going to pop right out of my head!

So here it is in it's new home. Again, I don't know if I should paint it white or leave it. Something tells me that I'll end up painting it, though:)

Here is a close up of the beautiful ornamental details...

The cashier that checked me out said she priced that particular mirror. She said she knows that it's worth probably at least a couple of hundred, but no one would pay that much at Goodwill - so she thought she might as well make it affordable! Here's another interesting story she shared with me. She said a lady came in a couple of weeks ago and bought two pairs of shoes. She paid about $30 for them (they were really nice, new shoes) but then she put them on Ebay and sold them for close to $500! Can you believe that?! This tells me two things: One, there are fabulous bargains to be found at thrift stores. Yes, one might have to do a little digging and searching, but that's half the fun, don't you think? And two, in today's economy, I think it certainly is a good idea to think about picking up a few extra bargains here and there at thrift stores with the idea of reselling them for a profit. Nowadays, every little bit helps! If you already enjoy "treasure hunting" anyway, why not?!

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone!

Having a little knowledge about that stuff can really help! I know nothing about anything, so I'll just keep the treasures I find. :)

I really like your frame in gold, but I'm sure it would be pretty painted, too.

I love the mirror! Sometimes gold frames can look a little gaudy, but yours looks very mellowed--I think I'd leave it as is if it were mine.

I have such a hard time with picture frames, trying to mix and match them and find the right style/color combination! I could see your finds all painted white, but then again...! Or maybe black...?

I think white or black would be lovely. Or even a shade of red to match your run. It's amazing the things you can find at the thrift store!

Lovely little find! My vote is for painting it white, but it also looks pretty nice as is. Gotta love Goodwill. :)

I love the mirror you found. I have one very similar. Mine says 1909 on it, so I've always been afriad to paint it--though it's probably not worth anything.

Love all of the frames too. It is always such great fun to find good deals.

BTW, the spray paint I used on the table was Krylon Fusion. I bought some once to use on plastic and never did that project. I then used it on a project w/wood and it has become my new favorite. It just covers so well. I bought some cheaper paint a couple of weeks ago and realized that the Fusion is my new go to spray paint, especially for bigger projects. Lowes didn't have it yesterday when I went to replenish. : (

I used the black satin finish. It does say that you don't need primer and I did prime the table, but usually don't prime.

Victoria (sister I blog w/) and I went to Goodwill this weekend--we found some great stuff.

That mirror is beautiful, I wouldn't change it at all, if it's truly a valuable antique, then it's even more precious with the original finish, isn't it?

How happy I am for you! That is a beautiful mirror. I vote for you to paint it white...it will be a perfect cottage mirror if it's white and chippy...maybe pale pink underneath?

I think I'll hit my Goodwill tomorrow. Now you have me salivating for a real bargain!

Oh I know there are deals at the thrift stores. I'm funding our trip to Scotland next summer with my thrift shop sale -- on Etsy not eBay though. Your mirror is so lovely.

That mirror looks familiar!!!
We had an estate sale for my Mother-in-law's things this past fall.
What was not sold went to Goodwill.
I thought the mirror sold to an antique dealer.
But could it be the same mirror?
If so it was a very expensive mirror..I just had nowhere to put it.
It was sold for a good price...I thought?
If it is the same one wow I am so glad you ended up with it and LOVE it!

Goodwill Hunting...HA! :-)

Well, you don't have to sell me on thrifting. I think I'd do it even if I had a lot of money. There's something about the thrill of finding something so good...so cheap! And, I really do appreciate the whole recycling others' castaways. I'd rather reuse/repurpose than buy new. I wish more people would! But I think I'm preaching to the converted here. :-)

ANYWAY...That mirror! WOW! I would leave it just as it is, for a pop of gold sparkle amongst your fabulous white world.
