From Pigtails to Present

remember a picture my mother took of me once when I was a little girl. I was about sixish - wearing pigtails, no less - and in my bedroom standing by my dresser occupied with something in my hands...a toy, perhaps. Behind me, my closet door was open and there on the floor, nearly knee deep, it seemed, was a huge pile o' stuff. Toys, books, small pieces of paper {my earliest creative endeavors?} - just a huge pile of random objects spilling forth from my closet. It drove my mother nuts, I'm sure. Little did I know then, that that would always be me. Preoccupied with the moment at hand with piles of stuff always lurking behind me. Out of sight, maybe, but still there none-the-less.

Our Saturday was mostly spent cleaning out the garage. We made what you might call a very small dent. {I mostly felt like we shuffled things around for four hours and then put everything back in different spots, but our substantial garbage pile proves otherwise.} The fault is my own as I have a great tendency to "stick stuff places", just to get it out of the way and out of sight. "Eek! Company is coming and I don't have time to sort this stuff! I'll just stick it in the garage and worry about what to do with it later.", I'll say. Yes, I'm one of those people. I do not have an organized bone in my body, sadly enough. I can on occasion get and stay organized for a brief period of time, but like a snowman in August, things quickly start to fall apart. So here we are with a very messy garage once again. And then there is the huge unfinished space above the garage for even more piles of random objects. It seriously looks like it has been ransacked, as does my laundry room, bedroom, and closet right now. But that's a whole other story.

Among all the cans of paint and summer toys in the garage....

Are lots of shelves still waiting to be sanded, primed, and painted.

Though our time this summer has been too limited to do a lot of work on my studio storage unit {we jokingly call her the "the monster" due to her size and weight!}, our s p a c e to work on it has also been very limited - thus motivating us to get the garage cleaned out so that we can have a proper workspace.

I think she's going to be worth it!

So after working for a good long while on the mess in the garage that we've I've created over the last few months, hubs and I found a stopping point, showered, and headed out for a nice little dinner date.

I may not wear pigtails anymore, but I guess I still know how to make and maintain a proper mess after 30 something years. I wonder if that will ever change?

And did I mention that my mother is coming to visit in a couple of weeks? {Note to self: Close closet doors.}

Our garage is usually the same way. My husband decides he's gonna clean it all up and organize everything. Then it doesn't take long until its a big ole mess again. He just finished getting it all cleaned up again this week. It looks really nice and makes me feel happy when I go out there and everything is in its proper place. Now we just need to work at keeping it that way! :)

For most of my adult life, people have commented on how neat and organized I am. That's because I don't ever let them see "behind the curtain". The insides of closets and cupboards can be pretty chaotic... ARE very chaotic right now actually. And my husband is the one who "sticks stuff places" in the garage. It drives me crazy... because even tho I might have done the very same thing, at least if I was the one who stuck it there, I'd have a better idea where to go back to to find it!

I am pretty organized inside the house. At least I hide things behind doors! But if I want something gone, I just dump it in the garage. And hence the huge mess I have out there. Well, not huge. Because two cars reside there. But let's just say we're tripping over the stuff!

I'm so glad I'm not alone, girls! And those of you who know how to stay tidy - I need tips, hehe! Tracy, I bug hubs sometimes for the same reason...I'll put important things in "safe" place - and then I'll forget where!

Sheri, I will email you this week about the ceiling. Thanks for asking and we'll talk soon!
