"How Do You Like Me Now?"

I have succumbed to my "what if" tendencies and painted {just one coat so far} our kitchen door that leads into my studio yet again. By now you know that this is my modus operandi. When I'm struggling with a decision - and especially when faced with two choices that are both my favorites,I choose one, but after a while I get curious about the other. How would it look? Would it have been better?

Remember, I had gone with a beautiful shade of blue called "Tranquility" {Valspar shade from Lowes}. I LOVE the color and plan on using it in accents and furniture pieces. But I decided that since I want to use it in accents and furniture pieces throughout the house, maybe having it on all the doors in our house is a bit overkill. Plus, as I've mentioned, this shade of blue seems to be too "pastel" for hubs.

So I painted the door a deep expresso brown - almost a black. {Edited to add that the paint color is called "Fired Earth" from Valspar at Lowes}. Like I said, this is just the first coat and it needs another, but I'm posting a couple of photos because I like the "old, worn" look of it already and plan to scruff it up after the second coat to make it look similar to this.

Another change: I repainted my kitchen a few weeks ago but decided not to use the color we painted the studio. What did I go with? Anthem White. The same color as our trim work. Can you tell the difference in the wall colors between the above and bottom photos? I just love the contrast now between the walls and the dark doors and red cabinets...so crisp and light feeling! It's hard to tell in the photo below because of the sun streaming in, but that little chair is painted "Tranquility" like the door use to be. Who knew dark brown, red, and blue could actually work together in peace, love, and harmony?!

Two major remodeling decisions have been made - and I'm sticking to them this time...I promise! 1)Twice Remembered's walls will be white and 2)The doors will be dark expresso brown.

For what it's worth, hubs did not want white walls. He LOVES the dark doors now, though. And he hasn't even noticed I repainted the kitchen. ;)

{Edit: I've opened up my Twitter account again...I'm thinking having just the one account will be easier to keep up with than Facebook and Twitter. You can follow me there for updates between blog posts. Thanks!}

Gorgeous Kim. I liked the 'tranquility' door with the wall color, but the deep brown definitely looks fabulous with the all white of your walls now. Did you use a different sheen for the walls than with the trimwork?

Thank you, Cindy! Yes, the trim is semi gloss and the walls are eggshell. ;)

Kim,

When you originally posed the question, I was one of the few that said answered paint the door brown. Your blue door was lovely, but I tend to be drawn to contrast of colors. The deep brown and rich reds look stellar against the white walls and trim. The soft blue touches are bling! I hope the hubster doesn't read your blog. He will suddenly notice the change in wall color.

Your Friend,
Deborah

PS The creamer looks great on your counter.

I think the espresso brown color for the door was ther perfect choice. And White walls when they are intentional like yours sing. Great choices.

Oh, that's pretty too! At first glance, I thought that your door was a dark grey because of the way the light hits it. I guess you can say that I like anything that you do! Personally, I am crazy about white woodwork AND walls. It's such a wonderful backdrop on which to layer punches of color.

I loved the door before but I really love the espresso door now! I had never imagined painting a door anything other than white until I came across your brilliant blog. I was going to head out to Lowe's this weekend to purchase the Tranquility for our doors but now I'm thinking twice..... Can you show us what the espresso looks like with your dark hardware? Or will you be changing those?

Thanks, y'all! Lauren, your place is amaaaaazing! I love all those colors together...they DO work very nicely together, don't they?!

Deborah - loving those pieces! I'm going to be doing a blog post {after my mom's visit} about all my new goodies. Can't wait to share with everyone!

Simply a Farmer's Wife - for now, I'm going to still be using the oil rubbed bronze handles {I'll take photos when I'm finished with the door - it's still knobless} but my dream is to have glass/crystal doorknobs! Maybe I can afford it if I buy them one at a time over the course of a year!

The brown door works because it's the same colour intensity as the cabs. I think the mint would have also worked if the intensity had been deepened up.

Alot overlook that aspect but it really does work!

From my monitor, at first your door looked like a sage green. I thought cool! Now that you say brown, cooler! :)

I like it when you change your mind. You're an online colour swatch in real time. How cool is that for us? LOL

Oooh, I do like this better. In the first picture, I thought it was a dark gray and that even looked great. We painted our back door (which is a french door) black and we love it against the neutral walls and white trim. I like it both ways. The tranquility door with the wall paint looks more cottagey, but with the white walls and dark door, it looks more old worldy. BTW, what was the wall color before it went white? I actually really like it!

Sooo pretty, Kim! Love the new door color! The blue made the room look quaint and cottagey, but the color is probably closer to what a vintage home would'ave had. And....what IS is about men not wanting white paint in the house? Were they all born in caves or something....??!!! lol!

Love your dark brown door. OK, maybe I'm just a bit biased because I painted all the doors in our house dark brown ;-) But really, dark-coloured doors look a lot more substantial than white doors, and contrast so nicely against light trim and walls.

Little late commenting on this post, but I was catching up and just had to mention I just recently painted my bedroom ceiling Lowe's Valspar "Tranquility" color. Probably sounds strange, but it works well with the walls painted in a color called "Juniper Breeze". The color scheme I'm working toward is like "sea glass". Very soothing.

Anyway . . . just thought it interesting we found the same color in all the colors available. Oh, and as much as I love the paint color "Tranquility", I totally love the darker color on the door. :o)

Hi! I just discovered your blog, this morning, through the The Lettered Cottage via Pioneer Woman. Ah, the kitchen wall colors with the red cabinets --very swell. I have a question. Is the ceiling and crown molding more white than the walls? There are so many whites. I read that the inside of the "cabs" are "Homestead Resort Taupe" but I wondered about the other whites and creamy whites. I like the semi-gloss for trim and eggshell for walls, too. LOVE the painted wood on the ceiling with the iron accents. It's a kitchen I want to be in, wake up to, simmer a pot of stew on a winter's day. The cherry red with the rubbed brown glaze is wonderful.

Your home is so storybook. A very dear sense of Place.
