Cottage Studio Before Photos
I know everyone has probably seen photos of my sunroom / office / future craft studio a million times, but for the sake of comparison later, I wanted to share some photos of my "studio in progress". We're coming up on the second weekend of work in here and I was able to get a head start on it last night and today.
By the way, if you'd like to see the *BEFORE* before photos (that is, what the space looked like months ago when I was just dreaming of a studio), just click here.
I took out the banister and carpet on the steps quite a while back, but last weekend we patched the walls as well as insulated the ceiling where the old sky lights use to be. We removed the poorly installed skylights years ago when we replaced the roof and will someday even remove the current old ceiling. The beadboard is ok (I love beadboard!) but it's the thin imitation beadboard and wasn't exactly installed with the greatest of care. So for now, we are left with recessed "patches" on the ceiling, as I call them. My solution to the eyesores was to paint a sky mural within each of the square holes to give the effect of skylights. I painted the murals today but will show them to you later:) I still have one sweet detail to add, plus this weekend hubs will be adding a nice wide moulding around the perimeter of each skylight. When the moulding is up, caulked, and painted, I'll take some photos. But I will tell you that I LOVE how the murals have turned out so far. I didn't know what I was going to do with those big ugly plywood holes, but I really think the murals were just the right solution.
So this is what the studio looked like last night. I apologize for the dark photos - I rarely photograph at night for this reason. It is a small space for sure, but I think the tall ceilings and lots of natural light will make the studio feel less cramped.
(Has anyone seen my ladder?)
What is really exciting for me is that I've finally figured out a color scheme! The walls are *not* going to be the same as kitchen and living room as I thought I would probably choose. I'm going to keep it a little secret until after they are painted, but if you have any good guesses or opinions, I'd love to hear them! I will say that the accent colors I'll be using are white, off-white, and chocolate brown (neutrals that go with just about any color, I think). Choosing paint colors is soooo hard - there are too many options!
So what colors would you choose for this space?

I love this space! I would choose either a light blue or sea green, but that's just my preference. I'm sure whatever you choose will be lovely. Thanks for the update. xxoo
Hey Kim!
I would paint it "Fencepost" by Glidden (Home Depot) or "Sisal" by Ralph Lauren (Home Depot).
Two of my favs!

Hi Kim! Looking good! You wouldn't dare go pink & chocolate would you? It's a beautiful combo, but one that takes some talent at choosing the right colors. Ooh, robins egg and chocolate look GREAT together too! It's one of my favorites--again takes talent and guts. I can hardly wait to see what you've chosen! Fun!

Oh I am so happy for you that you found some caned chairs! I have looked high and low and just never seem to come across any! I'm going to try St. Vinney's next time i'm in town.
The sofa thing--Well, it's pretty amazing, but I was able to order from The Taylor Scott Collection! I just placed my order yesterday. So, I have to wait, but only 6 weeks or so. I am still in shock at how awesome things worked out. I don't even know If I should publicize the great deal I got! I'll post some pictures soon! Have fun working on your studio this weekend. Am I close in quessing your colors?!
I NEVER tire of photos of makeovers, sweet little chick! Keep 'em comin'!!
Smoochies,

Hey Kim ~ look forward to seeing what you do with your studio. The murals sounds like a good solution to the problem you encountered.
Last night we went to Lowes and chose the colors for our bathroom, since that will be the first room we are finishing in the new house. {I had to get some paint for the clawfoot tub} This morning I come here to see you have chosen simliar secondary/accent colors as we have for our bathroom! It will be interesting to see what your primary color will be. =) Drop by my blog when you get a chance for a post on it! =)
Enjoyed the update and look forward to seeing more.

I'd probably go with light blue or yellow. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!
I'm totally fried when it comes to picking colors, as we just got done having our two bathrooms renovated back-to-back. What an arduous process. I shouldn't complain at all, as I didn't personally have to do it. (Have respiratory problems, so couldn't if I wanted to!) We chose the brown families for the bathrooms; yellow for the master bedroom and kitchen. A light neutral of some variety for the hall, which is dark anyway. And we have five rooms to go!

Nice to meet you. I agree when I've picked out paint colors I start seeing doubles and then get SO confused. I'm going to be painting my room..so I'll be going through it all over again. Wendy
Hi Kim~
So glad to hear your studio is coming along! You will be so happy when it's finished, and I can't wait to see the murals you are doing! :)
As far as paint goes, I would probably go with a light green, or maybe something energetic like butter yellow! But you have to choose something you love! :)
Have a wonderful rest of your weekend! :)
I'm partial to sea greens and blues; I think those would look terrific in this space.
I'm loving your ideas for the murals and can't wait to see them! I have to say...this is not typical for me but I'd almost like to see the walls and ceiling white (yes, white! ;-) to make the murals pop and to make your craft projects the focal point. Maybe rich blues and golden yellows for furniture and accessories to stick with the "sunny skies" concept. But it is your room after all, lol, so I can't wait to see!
Looks like you are working wonders with your home. Living in a building site/wreck myself I KNOW how much work it all takes!
I love the idea of making fake sky patches over the recesses in your ceiling and I admit to pure envy over the size of your ladder! (falling off a wobbly stepladder myself has given me ladder envy)
I'm guessing a light blue-ish, aquaish
You know, that wonderful color everyone loves :)
Hi everyone! Wow, many of you are soooo close about the color! Thank you so much for all of your lovely suggestions - they could all work!
