Seeing Red in a Cottage Kitchen

I've been fortunate to meet so many other "red lovers" in the last few days. I really appreciate all the thoughtful comments about my red cabinets. Someone asked me if it was a tough decision to choose a bold color such as red for our cabinetry and I have to say that for me, I didn't even have to think twice! Love, love, love red! (Now, picking the right shade of red was quite a different story!)

But you don't have to have red cabinets to have a red cottage kitchen. Red accents are just as lovely with cabinets of just about any color. It's a beautiful morning - just perfect for snapping photos, so I took a few shots of some of my red accents right now:

There are those berries again! You've seen them in my window sill as well. I found the big white bowl either at Goodwill or Marshall's on clearance. I bought it a while back, but I know that I didn't pay much (true to my thrifty form!).

A teapot from Ebay, platter, bowl, and eggs from Goodwill, vintage doily from Ebay (it was a part of a very large vintage doily collection- I struck gold with this one!), and dish towel from Wal-mart... Funny story about the eggs: One morning I decided that I was going to order some ceramic eggs online. But I first made a run to Goodwill, because...that's just what one should do on a Friday morning...and what do you know! I found these ceramic eggs all wrapped up and hidden down in a vase!

I bought lots of red and white cotton dish towels on clearance from Wal-mart a couple of weeks ago. They came in packs of three for just $2 per pack! I bought three packs to use just for decorative purposes. A couple towels sewn together would make a great little summer pillow cover, don't you think?

A little word stone I made a couple of years ago....

I bought faux apples at Wal-mart as well. Did you know that you can now buy them by the bag? The cashier ringing me up that day thought it was a real bag of apples! The old bowl is from Goodwill.

I hope you've enjoyed taking a peek at my recent red additions. I want to incorporate more robin's egg blue - just a little here and there as a secondary accent color - but it's a harder color to find. But you can bet that I'll also be on the lookout for that happy and delicious color red!

I just absolutely love your kitchen! I also love the color red, it is all throughout my house. I have been wanting to redo my kitchen cabinets for awhile and was toying with doing them white or black. Now that I have seen yours, I am totally doing red! I hope you don't mind a copycat!

Kim, I really like that big white bowl!
Love red too. I've used it as the accent color in both my living/dining areas and the kitchen too. Red and Yellow just seem to "pick me up" and "energize" me.
I hope you have a fantastic day.
Did you know it was your blog that inspired me to get off my big ol' behind and give our kitchen a facelift? Well, if you didn't know, now you do.
Your blog remains one of my very favorites.

I love red and white. Love.them.

I'm always on the search for whiteware from thrift stores. Eventually I would be very satisfied to have a complete collection.

Your kitchen is really beautiful!

Kim, your red cabinets are awesome. I'm one of those people that has such a small, center of the house kitchen that red would make it too dark so I accent with red. Your ideas are great and I just love the basket and ceramics with the red berries in them. It's just so cute!

Hi Kim..I haven't commented in awhile but I have followed your blog since...cottageliving.com. YOu have such wonderful ideas and I loved the Penguin cake...I wish I had the patience to do that. I love your colors in you home. I have recently been adding red to my robins' egg blue...and it all started with a shower curtain on PB that I hung as curtains....thanks for your inspiration

Thank you, ladies! Laura, I totally don't mind! I love sharing ideas and hope people can use them any way they want...goodness knows I copy lots of things I find on other blogs!

Rechelle, ah - that's so sweet what you said. It's great that we can all motivate each other to tackle those big projects (and small ones, too!)

Sonya, I bought a word stone kit online a while back. I wrote about it here. I hope this helps!

I always enjoy all your comments - thanks for dropping by!

I love red, and it looks so beautiful in your kitchen. Red is one of my favorite colors. It is so energizing and bright and cheery. The white bowl is so pretty. Thank you for reminding me to try finding things that I want at stores like the Goodwill. Have a lovely day!! :)

I am a sucker for red and robin's egg blue. I have always loved red, and the blue is a new fave in the last few years or so. I snatch up almost everything I see in the robin's egg blue since I so rarely find it. It has spread from my living room to the clothes my little girls wear. LOVE IT!

I just found your blog. I love the red cabinets. I have those same dish towels. We have been renovating our "raised ranch" for the last 3 and 1/2 years in hopes to make it more like a "cottage farm house by the sea". I grew up by the ocean in new england. So that is the look we are going for. I look forward to seeing what you guys have been up to. Renovating is so much fun.

I just passed a Goodwill store and was thinking about stopping to do some window shopping.
If I can purchase a pretty bowl and coffee pot that would be great.
I love the color red.
