Goodbye 2009, Hello DIY Magnetic Scrabble Board Project!

Hello, my dear blog readers! How are you? It has been a couple of weeks since I've posted, I know. Shortly after my last post, hubs and I were both hit with a really nasty bug/virus of some sort - two of our children had already been dealing with it and our third got it right about the same time we did. The kids are now mostly better, but hubs and I have pretty much been bed ridden for two weeks. I've had to get out to do some grocery shopping and to take some of my brood to the doctor, but other than that, we've been horizontal, ugh! We had a lot of Tomorrow is another day - and another month, year, and decade! plans for our winter break, but none of them worked out. But tomorrow is another day - and another month, year, and decade!

I guess it goes without saying that my little studio is not complete - I did not reach my goal of having it completed by the end of the year. Prior to us being sick, hubs wanted to spend two or three weekends laying more hardwood flooring, so that was work time that took away from my studio ...but I don't mind. I'm thrilled to finally have some more real flooring! I've decided that my goal for 2010 is to not stress about reaching my self imposed deadlines. This year - {this decade!} has shown me that life happens - things beyond my control, and that I need to just try to roll with it. I want to continue to enjoy our projects as we get to them and complete them, but I don't want to take the fun out of it all by being discouraged over missing deadlines or worrying over "what I'm going to blog about?!". It's all good, for there is nowhere to go but forward!

Before this bug knocked me to my booty, I was able to complete a fun project for the studio. I made my own large magnetic board from scratch! Yup, I stumbled upon some nice trim hidden away in the garage, bought a big piece of sheet metal and plywood, and that was the beginning of a pretty nifty project! About finding that trim in the garage...it was completely serendipitous! I had been envying the same trim at Lowe's recently but it was too expensive and very much out my budget. But I had forgotten that I had bought a lot of the same trim a few years before when it was a little ...It was completely serendipitous!cheaper. Weird, huh? Imagine my surprise when I found enough of the trim to use for several projects!

I'll share with you the steps to making your own magnetic board at a later date, but here are a couple of photos of the board I made nearing completion. The magnets that I made for the board are actually 300 vintage scrabble tiles that I purchased from Ebay a while back. I super glued thin, rare earth magnets to the backs of them. It took a while, but they work perfectly!

I didn't want the sheet metal on my magnetic board to show, so we {my ZuZu and I} decoupaged vintage dictionary pages to the entire board. Here in this photo, we're just getting started laying out the pages. The first layer covered all the edges and the center, but for the second layer, I placed the pages haphazardly as if all the dictionary pages had just fallen from the air. Actually, there was a lot of strategy that went into the placement {let's face it, even in the dictionary, there are some words we'd just rather not look at everyday!}, but overall, it was a nice random pattern. You can see a bit of the painted and distressed trim in this photo. I think it looks great against the vintage dictionary pages! When I'm well and can be up and about without coughing until I gag, hehe, I will take photos of the finished project. I think it's one of my most favorite Twice Remembered projects thus far!

I hope you all have been well and stay well and I'm looking forward to continuing to share with you in 2010 all our cottage happenings here at Twice Remembered! Thank you so much for visiting! Until next time...

"May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that's always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through!"

"Mexican Food" Themed Cupcakes + And The Winner Is...!

H i, everyone! Is everyone staying warm? The big chill has reached Tennessee and I know it's not nearly as cold here as it is elsewhere, so I hope you all are staying toasty warm at home!

My little one had a party this week in her Spanish class to celebrate the end of the six weeks. Her teacher had asked me to make a cake for the party if I could. I decided to docupcakes instead. I cheated a little and just had the bakery make and frost the cupcakes for me, but I was excited about making the "Mexican Food" themed toppers. {It took about 8 hours to make toppers for 30 cupcakes, and baking the cupcakes and making frosting would have added another couple of hours - so why not have someone else do that part?!}

I made the Mexican food from Starburst, Twizzlers, and frosting. For those of you that may be interested in trying this project, here is what I used to make everthing:

tortillas:yellow Starburst {I pressed the flattened Starburst into yellow sprinkles to add a little more texture}
cheese: orange Twizzler
lettuce: green Twizzler
tomatoes: red Twizzlers
plates/bowls: Starbursts and Twizzlers {depending on the color}
meat filling: canned chocolate frosting
guacamole: canned white frosting that I tinted green
sour cream: canned white frosting
red sauce/salsa base: red icing from a tube {red frosting is REALLY hard to make...it's so much easier to buy red cookie frosting in a tube. It was the perfect color and consistency for this project.}

You can soften Starburst and Twizzlers in the microwave for 10-12 seconds, one piece at a time, and then flatten them to cut with a cutter or small extra sharp scissors or mold them into whatever you need to create. How neat is that?!

So with just a few candy supplies and a lot of time, hehe, I was able to create eight different dishes, like Chips and Salsa...

Burritos...

Guacamole dip...

Taco "pizzas"...

Nachos...

Tacos...

Quesadillas...

And taquitos!

These were so much fun to make. If you have any questions about any of it, please let me know!

The Contest is Over! And the Winner is....

I want to thank everyone for their support the last few weeks during round one and two of the home improvement contest I entered a couple of months back. The contest is over now and the winner has been announced! The bad news {but I have mixed feelings about calling it bad news} is that Twice Remembered did not win the final round $1000 grand prize. But the good news is that the winners, Lorraine and her husband of Van Dyke Project are so deserving of this big win. You have to visit their blog to see how they, by themselves, converted this little old house {photo below} into a spectacular bungalow. It is an amazing transformation, inside and out! {Seriously, they built their own front door...how talented is that?!!} Please check it out when you have a moment!

The other part of the good news is that hubs and I did win $1000 worth of Home Depot gift certificates in the first round, and let me tell you, that will help us so much with our projects here. We will be using the certificates to purchase the beadboard and trim that we need for the rest of the kitchen, living room, and hallway, as well as the materials we need to create a fireplace for the dining room and to makeover our living room fireplace. Thanks again for your vote contribution! We truly appreciate it!

Another Red Kitchen to Share! + The Last Day to Vote!

There is nothing that excites me more than to your home related projects, especially if they were inspired by something you may have seen here at Twice Remembered. And extra especially {hehe} if you were daring enough to paint your cabinets RED! It's one thing to be inspired, and it's quite another to dive right in and make your inspiration a reality! So kudos to all you who take on projects, large and small, with patience and gusto!

Today I'd like to share the new, the Lee's kitchen over at 1 Frugal Queen. She started out with a nice - but very white - kitchen.

She added beadboard to the sides which gave her cabinets a custom look...

And she added also added crown moulding at the top and trim moulding at the bottom of the cabinets, which simply transformed the basic cabinets she had to begin with!

She painted her cabinets a beautiful red on the outside, white on the inside, but the shelving remained red for color and interest - perfect!It's extra work to paint the inside of the cabinets, but I think it's well worth it!

One of my favorite things to add to plain surfaces are wooden appliques. Lee used a couple right here in the sink area on the false drawer fronts. It's a perfect place for them!

With a little trim and some beautiful red paint, Lee has created a warm, cozy, and inviting kithen. I LOVE it! Maybe she'll pop in here and tell us how she's loving her new red cabinets so far!

To see more of Lee's kitchen transformation, please visit her at 1 Frugal Queen to see all her 8 of her blog segments about her kitchen. {Look in the left hand bar under the section "Kitchen Makeover Chronicles" for all the links to her kitchen makeover.

If you've ever been inspired by a project here at Twice Remembered, please don't hesitate to share it with me because I'd love to share it with us others! {By the way, a few people have had problems with me email link. How is it working for you?}

{This is it! Today is the LAST day to vote on my projects in the final round of the contest I entered at Repair-Home.com! More information below and a HUGE thank you to all those that have voted so far!!}

I entered projects in 11 different catagories, and in 10 of those categories, our projects were voted #1! YOU through your votes made that happen and hubs and I can't thank you enough! I have a feeling that 2010 is going to be a great year for Twice Remembered due to this contest because we are finally going to get to complete projects that we've been putting off for a long time!

I have a feeling that 2010 is going to be a great year for Twice Remembered!Not only did your votes help us to place at the top in individual categories, but it put two of our projects into the final round of the contest. {There are only five finalists' projects total.} This final round ends on December 15th. The winning project receives a prize of $1000 {not too shabby, eh?!}.

So once again, I'm asking for your help and vote. {I appreciate your patience with me and my "like-a-child-at-Disneyworld" exuberance, hehe, but I've never done anything like this before and am thrilled that we've reached this final stage.}

A Winter Penguin Cake Revisited

It seems that each winter for the last few years, hubs and I are usually busy getting prepared for a big gathering for friends here at home but we've decided that this year, we wouldn't plan anything. I'm hoping that next year, we'll be finished up with a lot of things and that the place is just more presentable for friends. So I thought today that I'd take a look back to one of the parties we had last year for the kids - a winter themed penguin party! It was so much fun to plan for and the party itself was a blast as well. The most fun for me? Making the penguin cake!

I had never worked with fondant or gumpaste before and had only made a handful of cakes, but I really wanted to try my hand at making my own penguin figures. I used The most fun for me? Making the penguin cake! half fondant and half gumpaste and mixed them together (store bought - worked great, edible, but NOT tasty! Truly, just for looks!). My idea was to just make about 5 penguins but the girls wanted 11, the number of kids attending the party. It took me a couple of weeks to make all the penguins and everything, but I'm really pleased with how they turned out! Somehow I ended up with 12...miscounted! I had a little problem with some of the penguins drying and cracking a bit, but not to the point of falling apart. The eyes were tough to paint on, as well, but overall, it was pretty easy - just tedious! I hope you enjoy the photos!

I made several different cake sizes in chocolate and yellow. A LOT more cake than we could actually eat at the party, but a lot was needed to hold all the penguin activity. I had the kids give me ideas as to what they wanted the penguins to be doing and I used all of their ideas except for building an igloo, lol. I gave away a lot of the cake and we eventually finished off the rest.

Please CLICK photos to ENLARGE)

The blocks of "ice" around the perimeter of the cake are just sugar cubes:)

I enjoyed making the snowman. It's hard to tell from this angle, but nose is actually carrot shaped.

Is that sweet little penguin really going to throw a snowball at the other sweet penguin down below?

I loved this penguin family here...mama, daddy, baby with blanket and penguin doll, and the unhatched egg with feet. I think the baby looks excited about the prospect of sliding down the hill, too, and wants to go next! What does mama think about that? Daddy thinks it will be just fine!

Watching all the activity from below while sipping hot chocolate!

"Caught one!" (I could *not* get this poor penguin's eyes to look right, ugh!)

"Nice catch!" The water is just blue jello:)

Uh oh! We have another slider, folks!

Thanks for taking a look back to last year with me. It really puts me in the mood for SNOW though I doubt here we'll get any - just lots of cold weather!

I'm linking up to this weeks Saturday Night Special...check out the other great DIY projects!
