A Few Cottage Doors Installed and Accessorized

Ever so slowly, we're chipping away at our long renovation list of things to do. As I've mentioned before, we stay very busy with life outside of remodeling so that means every little thing we do here is a small victory. Installing three of our new pine doors this weekend called for a happy dance, to be sure. I just couldn't stop opening and closing the newly installed doors - Hubs did such a great job and not a creak to be heard! I'm so pleased with the new hardware, too, because I love the oil rubbed bronze finish. These new knobs were just 9.99 at Southeastern Salvage (and pine doors were only $98 each!).

Though we have a long way to go, our currently scary hallway aready feels nicer. There is just something about those big heavy doors that makes the house feel a little more substantial and old-fashioned. I can only imagine after we do the rest of the work including painting the doors, raising the ceiling, adding tung and groove boards like those in the kitchen, crown moulding, beadboard, and trim (oh yeah, and flooring) - what it's going to feel like then. Oh, I can't wait! Installing the doors is just the first step, but the other hallway projects will come later when we get more of the kitchen projects behind us.

I wanted to add a little more cottage charm to the doors so I'll be adding wooden appliques to the fronts and backs. The first one came out nice, I think. It's just an inexpensive little touch that you can add to just about anything...(I put them on the false fronts of our kitchen cabinets, too!) You can buy this particular applique at Lowe's for about $4 or search online for a bigger selection.

Speaking of the kitchen, I had someone come out and give me an estimate on installing the brick for the backsplash. He gave me a good deal and will hopefully he will be able to have time in May to come and do the install. I'll be taking care of the grouting and painting, though, just because I'm so persnickety. Also kitchen related - we have ants. I can't figure out where they are coming from and I hate the thought of just spraying chemicals all willy-nilly. I tried the Borax/sugar solution but it didn't work. Ugh! Any tips?

I'm in the throws of cleaning out closets now. You should see my living room now where the sorting and throwing away process is in full swing. I hope to be done by the weekend! My goal is to keep only the necessities and things that we actually use or are truly special.

So back to work I go!

I'm a new reader to your blog, but I know that vinegar will take care of ants. You can keep it in a spray bottle and spray wherever you see them, and when you eventually find where they're coming in, you can just make a solid line around it. :)

Hi Tilly! It's nice to "meet" you! Wow, I'll have to try that!

Funny story - I was grocery shopping last evening and with my cart already full and all my kidlets and hubs eager to get home and eat, I started walking passed the bottles of vinegar? I stopped and asked myself this series of questions..."Do I have vinegar? Should I buy buy vinegar just in case? When was the last time I used vinegar? When is the next time I'll use vinegar? I should really start cleaning with vinegar, but what's the best kind to buy for that? I'll do some research and pick it up later..."

So after getting home, I realized that instead of buying a head of lettuce, I accidently picked up cabbage. No problem - I'll just make cole slaw. But, I have no vinegar. Hehe, and now this wonderful vinegar tip from you! I should have picked it up while I was there:)

Thanks again and thanks for dropping in!

Kim, I love the little embellishments on the doors. This is the same one I used in my kitchen and I have a few in a smaller size out in the shop for above my sink. That's so funny that I have the same ones.
I love the doors & the door knobs are so pretty. Great deal on all of them!

I found that bay leaves work wonders in getting rid of ants and you don't have the vinegary smell.

I live in an old house with the glass door knobs and I hate them - they keep coming off. I've been wanting to replace them but couldn't find anything I liked. Pewter was too silver, brass is too shiny. You may have given me the answer to my problem.

Love the ceiling. Can't wait to see more.

Hi Kim,
The doors look great! Love the embellishments.
We just had our own bout with ants.
I hadn't heard of vinegar, but we tried the cayanne pepper before. It didn't phase 'em...we must have cajun ants. Even though I'm not thrilled with alot of chemicals in the house, we tried the Raid ant baits, and we haven't seen the buggers since.

I think the doors are gorgeous with their embellishments and the hardware looks great! I can't believe what you paid for the doors, that was a steal.

okay.........you're not going to believe this, but it worked for us!
I read that ants hate mint. So to rid your kitchen of them, you should put fresh mint in cupboards, etc. We didn't live near a nursery and there was none at our grocery store. Feeling helpless (and a little crazy;) I put sticks of Wrigley's Spearmint gum in the cupboards and poof! They were gone!

Thank you! And great ant tips, terrillyn, Kim, and Julie. That is so funny about the spearmint gum - I have got to try that! Those ants are all up in our cupboards...eek!

Hi Kim,
The long-awaited doorknobs! They are great! And I'm envious of the price!
Your progress is amazing. Johnny and I stood outside and looked back at the house and it's amazing what we've accomplished. It's one of the most rewarding things we've ever done.
Love that little wood embellishment. It's the details that really make a house a home.

I've been wondering about your doors! Those knobs looks so great and the little embellishment is such a charming detail.

I think I mentioned before that my DH looked at those doors at their Birmingham location and he just loved them and the price is soooo much better than HD or Lowes that it's worth renting a truck and getting all the doors we need from them! Thanks for the tip, we would never have know about this place if not for you!

Thanks Kim, Pat, and Carol! Slowly but surely things are coming together here:)

And Dawn - I can't wait to see photos of your porch remodel! I've been checking in and anxiously awaiting the reveal. I know it's going to be fab!

Manuela, OH, I'm so glad you were able to discover a nearby Southeastern Salvage! Yes, it *so* worth it to rent a truck. We didn't need to that this time around but we did the last - and still saved money! Have fun when you do your shopping there:)

Lora, I'm thrilled to have found your blog - it's so inspirational already! I've added you to my "Old Fashion Inspiration List":)

Here's my 2 cents about ants - We get them occasionally, and although ant traps do work best (leave them under sinks etc), we have 2 cats so we don't like to use chemicals and our solution is sprinkling whole cloves and cayenne papper about where we see them and they really don't like it.
We also hunt about outside and pour boiling water with cloves steeped in it into any anthill we find next to the house. Those together seem to help deter them, as well as cleaning where you see the ants well with a citrus scented soap...it seems to remove the "trail" they leave for each other to come back and find the treasure of food they're after. They don't like citrus much.

Kim, I love the new doorknobs. Would love to have some of those too. And those appliques are just great, aren't they? I've added some to my fireplace & kitchen cabinets. They really add a lot of detail.

I love the scroll appliques on the doors. The doors were lovely without them, but that extra touch takes them to "stunning"!
