Charming Glass Jar Bank
f you're like me, you're always discovering spare change in the couch cushions, under furniture, or in pockets while doing laundry. I've never really been quite organized enough to collect and save found coins in a sensible fashion like most folks do, I'm sure, but a couple of months ago I thought it would be fun to have a special place to "bank" any change that we find lying about the house. So with a glass jar, some scrapbooking paper, buttons, and little bit of decorative trim, I made a sweet little coin jar to keep in the kitchen. The kids love depositing money into it and I like feeling a little more organized!
It is that time of year again - "going back to school" time. This past week we were busy doing all of our school shopping and now I'm in the process of getting the house ready for the new school year...things like cleaning out the kids' dresser drawers and closets, culling old clothes, and cleaning out the laundry room and fridge and other areas that will stay quite "hopping" throughout the busy school year. With all the activity that homework, projects, and school events adds to our schedule, I like to get the school year off to a fresh start here at home. Also, (and many of you have been asking me), I do still plan to get my faux dessert business off the ground before December and feel like I am so close to being ready here. But home and family have always come first so I've been waiting until I feel like I can in good conscience move forward with the business without neglecting other duties...and I'm almost there. I have a lot of fun ideas that I'm really looking forward to trying...stay tuned!
I will probably be scarce here for the next couple of weeks as we get ready for the new school year and as we get accustomed to a new routine all over again. We've also all been sick here and I think between cleaning and organizaing, I'm going to try and rest up so I can fully recover. Poor hubs has a coughing fit every time he moves...but fortunately, the kids were the first to get sick and the first to recover, so they are now enjoying what's left of their summer break.
Before I sign off, I thought I'd post a few photos of some Goodwill finds... Goodwill hunting is SO much fun!
Mostly vintage cookbooks....
Baskets...(you can't tell from the photo, but the largest basket is BIG!)
Metal plant containers with text about gardening...
An oil painting (I'm not sure if I like the frame or not, but the painting itself is sweet!)
Thank you for your kind comments about the painted trivets and the chocolate chip cookies! I'm glad you enjoyed the photos! Until next time... Have a great rest of the summer!

I love those metal planters! And by the way, we're still enjoying a batch of the chocolate chip cookies I made from your recipe. Since there are no kids left in the house, they're lasting a long time! (They freeze well, too!) ::Jill
I love, LOVE those little plant containers! Maybe you'll get tried of them and sell them at your next online yard sale, LOL. ;-) Also -- can that frame be painted white? Some of the wood may show through...but I think in a good way.
very cool containers! i bought a basket this weekend too!! check out my blog. i posted yard sale finds on siunday. :)

I really like what you did to the jar it is so pretty. I keep holding on to jars thinking I can do something with them and now I've spotted your idea I know what!
Kim, your little jar bank is so sweet! And I think that I am coveting your large basket! What a beauty! Don't ever let go of that one because it really looks to me like it is handcrafted and not mass produced. I have a similar one that is very old but is smaller and has more of a round shape instead of oval. I want to go to your Goodwill!
OOH! I really like the metal planters! Good finds!
Wow, you found those vintage cookbooks at Goodwill! I'm seriously impressed! And I love what you did with your change jar. We have an old pickle jar that we have used for our spare change for a long time...we bought our new bathtub with change collected in it...and if I remember correctly, we bought our first VCR with saved change! Our jar, however, does not look as nice as yours! :)
By the way, I tried out your chocolate chip recipe and they tasted so good! Thanks again for the recipe! :)
Love the jar bank idea. I know just the jar to use. Got to get back to the thrift shop before some scoops it up.

Love the painting, too.
There is a collection of old pickle jars in our pantry. I need to figure out how to get the pickle smell out before doing anything with them.
Love seeing all of your goodwill goodies. The planters are really cool.
I like your bank jar too. Good idea!
I love your GoodWill finds! I got some great vintage sheets and pillowcases at mine. Even a white sheet that has Do Not Disturb printed between the red lines on it. Totally love it! xxoo
Hi Kim~
I almost fainted when I saw what you were doing in your hallway....a ton of work! Those are the kind of pictures that help me though. See Sweetheart, I never came up with that idea for you to do. But yes, I have thought of it.
I have a faux fireplace in my living room and gives me almost as much pleasure as the real one in the family room. After all, it's more for architectural design most of the year anyway. I'm sure your hubby could build a mantle like any of those you saw anyway.
Good to come by and catch up with you. Donna
Adorable! Great idea!
Ps. I linked to your blog on my post today. Check it out!

Just love the bank idea. I just
"inherited" a lot of canning jars and need banks for every area of my home where money collects (laundry and bedrooms). I have a few banks, but will definitely be making some like these to fill in where I need them. Thanks for the great idea
I also love those metal planters- and your blog is great!!!Thrift store shopping is the best! I'll be stopping in to visit often!!
i found your blog and love it! I have never thought to paint my walls apple green with the red cabinets. I know that you changed yours, but that is just what I am looking for. I even think that my husband will love it as much as I do! thanks for all the great ideas and tips! i will definately be back!
Please, stop by and say hello, I love to meet new friends, espescially ones with crafty talent! have a great night! I will be back!

Oh, glad you liked the recipe, Jill and Jenni! I've been craving those cookies lately!
Thanks for the nice comments about my Goodwill finds...can't wait to get back there!
I have been saving loose change for years. It usually adds up to $100-150 per year. It is just loose change from my pockets, when my purse gets too heavy and what I find loose around the house when I clean.
Lovely blog.
Sounds like you've been a busy bee! The start of the new School year always tends to inspire freshness in mothers.
I love your Goodwill finds! I want to come to your Goodwill! WOW!
Beautiful glass jar bank. Very inspirational!
