From Gaudy Art to Fabulous Chalk Board
irst I'd like to say thank you for joining me here at my new home! Everything is pretty much the same, you'll see. I have simplified the categories and you'll notice that the comments from the last few posts have disappeared, but everything else is intact. If you are a follower of my old blog (www.owcl.blogspot.com), I would greatly appreciate it if you'd follow me here now instead as I will no longer be updating the other site. As I mentioned in my last entry on my old blog, I will be hosting a giveaway soon for those that begin following me here in the next two or three weeks. Be sure to update your subscription if you have one as well! { Thank you! }
Make Your Monday: From Gaudy Art to Fabulous Chalk Board
Folks, if you haven't done so already, you must go to your nearest thrift store and purchase the biggest, gaudiest, most unattractive piece of framed art you can get your hands on. Watch out for other shoppers who are there for the same reason as they may try to run you over to claim the last one. {Well, more than likely, most other shoppers will wonder why you would pay good money for such atrocious art and they will feel pity for you due to what they perceive as a total lack of taste and class on your part. But nevermind those shoppers.}
Now, take that awful piece of framed something home {in my case, it was a lovely bullfighting matador. Yeah, I know.} and paint the frame. If you're fortunate, you will have found some art with a nice sturdy frame. Mine was wooden - totally worth the $9.99 I paid for it!
You may want to prime over the art itself to keep anything from bleeding through and to give the chalkboard paint something in which to stick. I can't tell you how gratifying this step was for me. Buh-bye bullfighter!
I next distressed my frame a bit, taped off the frame, and spray painted the middle with chalkboard paint. It took a few coats and honestly, I think next time I'm just going to use the brush on chalk board paint to avoid drips. I didn't have any problems until I neared the end of the spray can and then it started to drip a bit. But I'm very pleased with how my gaudy art to fabulous chalk board project turned out! I found the perfect spot for it in the kitchen, though I had intended to put it in my studio.
I ended up using two cans of chalkboard paint but one would have been PLENTY. I just used extra to try and cover up some drips (didn't work). I spent around $20 total for this project.
So there you have it! Have you done a chalkboard project yourself? I'd love to see it!
Now, off to find some ugly framed art for my studio...

Just found your new blog. Yeah for m!! Now I won't miss out.. and I would have had I not made it here!! ;0) I love the chalkboard idea. I have the perfect place in my front room for a project like that. I know my children would have so much fun with that!! :)
I've updated my bookmarks and glad to see you back and blogging now, Kim. I grew up with a blackboard in our kitchen and my mother would line me and my sister and 2 brothers up every Christmas in front of it with a "Merry Christmas" and the year written on it and take a picture of us. I have wanted one in my current home so I am going to do it-you inspired me! Just got to wait for hubby to move an outlet in the middle of the wall.
Love it! I have a couple of recently "salvaged" (re: picked from the trash, lol!) frames crying out for a good DIY project. I bought a burlap remnant a couple of weeks back and am thinking of fashioning a bulletin board out of one of them. Perhaps a chalk board for the other...
i can't think of a better use for gaudy art. There is sooooooo much gaudy art and it ends up in the landfills and this is the perfect thing to save that fate. It looks fab. I too have some recycled things turned into chalkboard. Come by and visit.
Followed you over and happy to see your blog! The chalkboard is great! I have no space in my kitchen...but will find space somewhere!
~Nancy
I love this project! I never thought about painting right over the painting. I think I may be the only blogger out there who still hasn't bought a can of chalkboard paint (I'm just a little behind). It's on my shopping list, though, and I already have a couple of projects planned for it.
Thanks for sharing!
Welcome to my "new" home on the web, ladies - I'm so glad you came! I'm happy to discover new blogs through your comments! I'm enjoying reading about your chalkboard projects and experiences as well:) Angela, don't feel bad - I'm late on the chalkboard train as well, hehe. But now I think I'm hooked!
What a cool idea. I love it! I have a piece of framed artwork that I don't love, and I wasn't sure what to do with it, and now I know. Thanks. :) And I will be following you to your new address.
Well, the new blog is nice and I'm following!
THat chalkboard paint can be addicting! LOVE yours. I am gonna go try adding you to my list....I have tried several times to add you to my blog roll with your old addy. Hopefully this will do thet rick. cherry
OMG, That looks amazing! I have bought the chalkboard paint in the past but never the spray so I will definately have to try it! I luv how this turned out and thanks for sharing cause I would have never thought of painting over the picture! Your blog is so inspirational!
Bekah...
looks great!I just bought an old frame similar to yours and turned it into a cork board. keep up the good work!
It looks fabulous! I love it!
cute idea funny thought one day someone may find your chalkboard at a sale and uncover the famous madador painting and sell it for millions LOL
Just today I rummaged through the garage for the possible horrid painting you mention here to create a chalkboard treasure. I've had the paint for at least a month, but can't find the right candidate! I will follow your advice! And thanks for the mention of the primer. Think I'll do that first too!
Brenda
Your chalkboard looks great there. We have a chalkboard on our basement door in the kitchen. I've been itching for another project but I'm still figuring out where. One idea I had was to do a single wall in my son's room all chalkboard. His room is on the list for fall/winter so I'm starting to plan!
~Michelle
Just came across your blog, and I love it! This is such a wonderful idea...and it's economical and a great example of recycling, too!
Thank you - and be sure to tell me if you try this project...I'd love to see it!
I LOVE the shape of the board! It's hard to believe that was suppose to be a (gasp) painting! I'm now inspired to do the same. Only problem is.. no wall space left.
Guess there's no choice. I'll have to MOVE.
Donna
Love this project, it looks fantastic, just wondering about the strength of the gaudy artwork, to write on?? Thanks, Sue
I just recommended a client to do this with an old painting for her son's room. It is such a great transformation and I love the black and white. Your blog is very beautiful!
Wonderful transformation! I haven't used chalkboard paint, yet. I would love, love, love to, but I can't seem to find the space to put a chalk board. We live in a small fixer upper, too. So, I totally agree with your philosophy. There is something very satisfying about taking a neglected house and slowly but surely turning it into a loved home. Best wishes to you!
Sigh, I'm infatuated with your chalkboard and those red cupboards I see in the background... the matador may have paired well with those :)
Loooove it!!!! It looks amazing!
Best use of a bullfighter that I have ever seen!
I appreciate your sweet comments! If you had questions, you should have received an email...thanks!
Hi Kim, Love this! What a great transformation and soooo useful! This would be an awesome post to link to for Metamorphosis Monday! :-) Susan
I seriously think of all the chalk boards I've seen recently...I love yours best!

Love the redo :)
And when I saw the bullfighter picture I had flashbacks... lol I think we had a bullfighter picture on our living room wall growing up. I didn't even remember until I saw yours. Weird and very very tacky.
So funny, I have an ugly Goodwill art that is drying in my dining room, waiting on the chalkboard paint as we speak. I am starting to get buttons up,(still learning about all this blogging business!) so I would like to trade if you would like...
Smiles!
Michelle
This looks fabulous. What kind of painting was it, canvass? How sturdy does the picture need to be to support the chalk board?
Thanks

So glad I found your blog today! I just picked up a huge (and ugly) picture at a yard sale yesterday for $2 because the frame was so nice! Now I can't wait to pick up some chalkboard paint!!!
haha, i laughed at: "and they will feel pity for you due to what they perceive as a total lack of taste and class on your part."
i totally just bought some heinous art from goodwill and felt very self-conscious about it at the check out.
but to your project - PHENOMENAL.
Happy squeals~well done!
