Fabulous Fireplace Inspiration
Have you all been staying warm lately? I know in the winter time, I practically live in my fireplace. And spending so much time near the fireplace, I've been thinking about it a lot lately. It has seen a few changes since we moved here but it still isn't quite where I want it to be just yet. Below you can see where we began - with 12 inch tiles that happened to be same tile on the floor in our foyer - and a brass insert. So I changed out the tile. Honestly, I still wasn't completely thrilled with it even then, but we had no budget and it was much better than the dark tan tile that was there before.
But you know me, eventually I had other ideas for the fireplace. So I decided to just paint the tile and then hand paint a single word on the front. Though what has gone on top of the mantel has changed over the years...
However, when we soon get to the living room part of the remodel, I want to really bulk up our fireplace by changing out the mantel, beefing up the sides {or the legs}, changing out the inset with the type of thin brick we used for our kitchen backsplash, and maybe even building an overmantel. Our living room ceiling is really high and right now, our fireplace isn't in proportion to the height of the room, so hopefully we'll be able to correct that. Also, we'll be building a faux fireplace in the dining room and inserting electric logs {no heat} that look and sound like a crackling fire for a realistic effect. These are just around $45 at The Home Depot!
So, like I said, I've been giving a lot of thought to fireplace mantel styles and I'm trying to figure out how we'll go about transforming our living room fireplace {for the final time!} and creating a new dining room faux fireplace from scratch. We already have two new mantel shelves - they are so much more chunky than our current living room mantel shelf. Solid wood, nice routing, and on clearance for only $25 each at Lowes a few months back! Lowe's was making room for some new styles and I feel like I practically stole these because originally there were well over $100 a piece.
In my research, I found some great fireplace makeovers on the Better Homes and Gardens site. The transformations below are remarkable!
Here, the homeowners used an antique fireplace. They've decorated the top of it beautifully.
I can appreciate the simplicity of the fireplace below. Maybe you don't desire to get into a big project that involves measurements and wood and nails. Just a couple of coats of paint can make all the difference!
Here's a big, chunky mantel that holds it's own against the visually heavy stonework.
I really like this space - it's just my style - but I'm not quite sure about the fireplace. Maybe it just needs something above it?
A tall fireplace can make a nice impact, and again, I like the dark black inset against the white.
I'm thinking about something like this for our home. It's the tall apron{?} under the shelf that I like and want to incorporate.
I'm also leaning towards painting at least one of our fireplace surrounds a very dark color like dark blackish brown so that it stands out against all the white beadboard we'll have going on throughout the house.
No wall space for a fireplace? What about putting one in a corner? I have never seen a mirror or piece of art hung in a corner like this, but I think it works!
A fireplace in the dining room...Mmmmmm! I just think it looks so cozy.
Or how about in a bathroom?
Nonworking or faux fireplaces can be just as charming as the real thing, don't you think?
Wow! The hardest part is going to be deciding what direction we'll take with own fireplace projects! If you have photos or blog posts about your own fireplace makeovers, please email them to me...I'd love to share some them in a future post if you don't mind. There can never be too much inspiration!

Do you Facebook? I would absolutely love to have you join me on my new Twice Remembered Facebook page! As you probably know, I don't get a chance to blog each day, but having a Facebook page allows me to daily post little snippets of things here and there - inspiration photos, ideas, blogs I love, thoughtful quotes, craft projects, questions {I love to hear your opinions!} and other cozy, home related tidbits that I think you might find interesting. I'll see you there!
Do you Twitter? You can follow Twice Remembered on Twitter as well. I mainly use Twitter for blog announcements such as when I create a new blog post or to remind folks about Make Your Monday, {and soon, this spring's upcoming month-long-in-May 4th Annual Cottage Charm Giveaway event!}

Kim,
Thank you for the inspiration. As I was reading your post, I kept gazing up at our fireplace. It is flanked by beautiful wall to ceiling built ins on each side but some time in the last 130 years the original mantle was replaced with a less substantial piece. I will keep you posted on my fireplace reno.

Great inspiration pictures. There are some real beauties in there. My fireplace is this massive stone thing that was not made well at all. It's also gas and lets in a mjor draft, so we had to seal it. I really just want to take a sledge hammer to it and put built-ins in it's place...we'll see.
Those are all gorgeous and it would be hard to decide which look I love best, but I think the one with the beams showing would be my favorite, sugar. Always changing my mind though. The prerogative of an old lady! *Wink*

Kim.. that was a wonderful post!! I feel so inspired now. I'm still seeking something for the backside of my fireplace and a lovely fireplace screen.
I'm going back for another view on one of the photos and taking notes!!! Thank you for all this research!

Kim thank you for this wonderful post. You have given me excellent food for thought and inspiration. My son and his new wife just purchased their first home. We were talking last night about doing something more with their family room fireplace. You've given me some excellent ideas. Thank you. I'll watch with interest to see what masterpiece you create with your fireplace mantel and surround. Everything you touch turns out beautifully. You are one truly talented lady. I love to watch what you are doing next!!
You could not have published this post at a better time for me. I am planning to do something with a very traditional fireplace cover this weekend. I painted the brick white years ago and loved it. Seeing all the great photos really has inspired me to tackle the cover. Thanks so much- and I am a follower on twitter.

We had Robert the carpenter transform ours last spring. It's on my Projects page. I'll send you the link to the big photos though. I love all these that you've posted today!

Wonderful pictures! I think two of my favorite looks are painted brick and dry stacked stone. I saw a house on HGTV a few years ago that had a wall around the fireplace built out of concrete board and then they acid washed it. It was phenomenal! My hubby and I are going give it a try with our fireplace this summer.
Nothing says "cozy" like a fireplace. Thanks for sharing these great "before" and "after" photos. ~ Sarah
you did find some wonderful fireplaces! makes me want to redo mine however i paid extra to have a huge window installed above our fireplace! now i am wondering if i should of saved the money. i guess i could change the front of the fireplace! i like yours the way it is but i cant wait to see the after!
wow...your really doing your homework! The fire places are so inspiring!! I'm thinking of a faux fire-place ... but because of your post You've prompted some ideas on pre-purchased logs and then maybe finding a mantel to go with. We do have a working fire-place in our living room but I'd love to enhance another room with a fuax. Thanks for sharing!
What love inspirational photos! ... Dee Dee
Saw your post on Board Walk Blotter. Just in time, as I hate my fireplace, and you have lot of good ideas. Now I just have to work up the nerve to put paint to brick. (haha).
Love the fireplaces! Especially the one that looks old and worn done in white. Thanks for sharing.

My daughter has those electric logs..... When my grandson was about four she came into the living room to find him sitting cross-legged holding a stick over it with a marshmallow on the end.... We still laugh about it.
Warm blessings,
