Cottage Accessories

It's been a while. With the changing weather, I've had to deal with some health problems so I've just been shuffling around here like a little old lady and haven't managed to get much accomplished. First hip problems, then my neck went out. Joy. We're still painting all those pine planks that will be installed as our kitchen ceiling. The color is called "Pale Bloom" and it's a pale creamy white. We have about 10 more painting sessions to go...painting 15 planks at a time. That's all the space we have to work. When they are dry we, stand them up on end to cure and will eventually bring them into the house to acclimate before we install them.

So in between painting sessions, I've just been puttering. I've collected lots of cottage accessories over the months and thought I'd give the empty space above the cabinets a trial decorating run. Everything will have to come down soon when we work on the ceiling (and we still have so much work to do in the kitchen...I just got the decorating bug that day, I guess!), but it was fun to experiment and get some ideas of how to display my wooden bowls, baskets, and "white" items. I bought some thin little long twigs to put around the edges and this gives kind of a rustic, natural look. I may need to elevate some of the items a bit...we'll see.

Oh, in case some of you are wondering about what I've decided to do with the backsplash, I've made a decision! My choices were beadboard or painted and antiqued brick pavers, or 1 inch travertine tile. I was really, really leaning toward the tile because it just matched perfectly with the countertop we've chosen. Upon further consideration, I felt that it might just be too busy with all the other patterns we'll have going on. Some also felt that it might look too modern for a cottage. Since we'll be putting beadboard halfway up the kitchen and dining walls, I felt that also using it as a backsplash would be a little redundant. So to add more texture and for that old-fashioned feel, I've decided to go with the brick pavers. You can see a couple in the photo below that I've painted up and antiqued.

Gotta love red flowers! I'd like to paint that planter an antique brown or antique white. I picked up that gumball machine at a yardsale last week. I did *have* some chocolate malt balls (Whoppers) in there, but they didn't last long.:)

I found a home for that 100 year old painting of a cottage I bought a few weeks back. I put it above my armoire in the bedroom. There's just something so home-y about it. Ah, and the bedroom furniture. Yet another painting project for the future. Am I obsessed or what?!

I love your home !! It is so inviting. Can I ask what is on the sides of your island in the kitchen ? Is it real tin ? I'm trying to come up with something subtle for my dining room, below the chair rail. This looks perfect ! Thanks,

I love your kitchen!I wrote you in summer about your green paint. I ended up painting my kitchen cream, again, because I don't have a ton of light in there. Now looking for a great fabric to make a valance. I love your ideas! Hope you are feeling well.

Looks beautiful, Kim. Your cabinets are gorgeous...anything is going to look good up there, but your little arrangement looks great! I love your gumball machine, too.

your kitchen is going to be amazing - it already is even! I like the bricks (I think - from what I could see anyway) and I hope you are feeling better and that you stay that way :)

WOW! I love the red cabinets! Wonderful. I love that you do everything on a budget. My friends tease me that I get everything from a yardsale, ebay or estate sale. You'll have to check out the great table I found this summer on my blog. I think it was posted in the June archives.
Love your blog.

Thanks Lily

You have a really lovely cottage. I love poking around it.

I have also been contemplating my space above the cabinets. I'm so bored with mine and hope to change it too.

What part of Tennessee are you in? I lived in Memphis for 15 years.

Thank you SO much, everyone! I'm thrilled that so many new guests have stopped by to say hello! Thank you for visiting:)

Anonymous, the sides of the island are made of old tin. I bought the island at the Nashville Flea market from a vendor who builds furniture from old house parts. I just love old tin - and old stuff period!

It's good to see you again, Jo! I understand about the light issue. Our bedroom is *very* dark..no windows - just one glass door. I haven't painted in there yet. Have fun finding some fabric!

Thank you, Meg. Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time "decorating" anything since we still have so much work to do renovation-wise. But it's so much fun to play!

Pam, I appreciate the well wishes. Somedays I get tons of stuff done, other days, lol, not so much. C'est la vie, I suppose:) Thanks for dropping in...it's always good to see you!

Another Kim! Welcome to my little cottage! Yes, I'm the queen of thrift. Being a stay-at-home sure is wonderful, but it doesn't pay very well, lol, so I have to spend my pennies wisely. Goodwill and yardsales are my friend! I will be sure to check out your blog and your table. I love great finds!

Hello, Lily and welcome! I used Latex Satin on my cabinets. I would suggest a good bonding primer first after degreasing and sanding cabinets. Latex is so much easier to work with and is really easy to clean up, too:)

Thank you, DaisyKim, for the compliments. I'm so glad I've finally decided what to do about that backsplash (and hubs is, too, lol!). Hopefully it will turn out nice. We shall see!

Belle-ah, welcome! Yes, isn't it neverending? It's so comforting to know that I'm not the only one. Hubs says that when I'm "finished", I'll want to start over, hehe. I hope not!

Salix-tree, it's nice to "meet" you! I just love Carol's blog...I only discovered it yesterday. Isn't Kim Parker's art amazing? Her work makes me so HAPPY! Oh to have her talent!

Hello, Jen! Feel free to drop in and poke around anytime! I majorly need to reorganize my site and projects and photos to make browsing easier:) I live near Nashville now, and was born and raised here in Middle Tennessee as well. THanks for visiting!

A pleasure to meet you, Naturegirl! Oh to have a green thumb! I live vicariously through folks like you who have a knack at gardening. I'm "practicing" on my indoor plants, lol. Yes, books! One of my favorite things in the whole wide world is a wonderful stack of books by my side with a cup of hot coffee or tea, a blanket, and a rainy day. It just doesn't get any better than that! I look forward to your future visits!

How wonderful to see you, Jordana! I only realized just today that your new little one has arrived! Congratulations to you and your dear family...and thank you for the kind words about the cabinets! SO glad that project is behind me!!!

I appreciate each and every comment here...Thank You All!!

Hello Kim,

so nice to meet you! I loved to find your comment on my blog today and to have you participating at my rose tea party!:D I'm amazed to see how much work you invest in your cottage, that's incredible! You've already achieved so much and everything you've finished made your home more a real cosy cottage. It'll be interesting to follow your next steps!
