A Little Wishing and Dreaming - Living Room Inspiration Photos
I'm sitting here on this rainy yet abnormally warm cloudy day, still in my pjs and sipping on a big cup of hot tomato soup. Does it get any better than this? Mmmmm....
Are you like me and love looking at photos that inspire you? I've been trying to come up with ideas for the living room to implement down the road, so I've been pouring over lots of photos. At some point, we'll be replacing our bulky, old sofa and love seat with some lighter, classic style pieces with perhaps a European feel. I don't know that much about furniture periods or styles - just what I like and what I don't like. I'm thinking of going with a sofa, two chairs, and a big round table in the center of the room. I'm not big on "ornate" though a little here and there is fine (like the brown mirror I hung in my living room last week). The overall look that I'm going for is something like you would imagine in an artist's cottage retreat in the country...a little eclectic, but simple. So I would like to mix a couple of different styles - the simplicity of farmhouse pieces with the beauty of "European in feel" pieces (namely the upholstered furniture). I love this sofa covered in ticking. I just want to melt right into it!
And look at these antique chairs covered in a dramatic red and white print (click to enlarge)...I'm not sure that I could ever pull off using something like this in my space, but I can see it being beautiful in someone's space somewhere! Imagine them with crisp white linen pillows opposite a white cushy sofa with similar legs.
I really love the freshness of this room, from the ceilings to that big, beautiful blue flower arrangement on the table.
And more flowers and interesting ceilings... I must say that I am in LOVE with the shade of blue on the doors - very French. And notice the darker black accent pieces like the frames on the mirrors and the chair? Cottage isn't just about white anymore. It's amazing how fresh even black can look with the right contrasting colors.
The walls and ceiling in this photo are very quaint and charming. Love that sofa, too!
A true French room! I love *everything* about this room. I can see our living room going in this direction if I could find all the different elements - and especially those yummy chairs! In the future, I'd like to replace the the TV with a plasma and move it to the wall opposite the fireplace (the wall the white chair is on here), but hide it away in a cabinet similar to what is pictured here. Then the TV can just *poof* go away!
The old mirror, urn with the greenery, and monochromatic tones of this space are just lovely.
Of course, I can't design my room around every bit of all the inspiration photos I just shared, but there are elements of each that I like and maybe somehow, I can pull together something of my very own that looks and feels nice. I like the frumpy antique sofa, the idea of using two chairs instead of one love seat, the nice big floral arrangements, the interesting ceilings, the big hutch, the large old mirror, the monochromatic color schemes, and maybe a touch of that blue I covet so much. Lots to think about!

I love that photo of the sofa. I have been hating my big bulky 90's sofa for quite some time now. Why did I ever like furniture that big? I keep hoping to find a magic slipcover... but I much prefer something like you mentioned.
Lovin' the eye candy. Everything is so calm and serene like a home should be!!!
Just love what you have done with your "Cottage"!!! It shows that it is a labor of love.....
I love all your inspiration photos. That sofa is wonderful! Must be nice to be able to think about a room other than your kitchen!

Liz, I understand! Our sofa set has been wonderful all these years and would probably last forever structurally, but it is starting to show it's age - plus, it's just not me anymore (we've had it for 8 years). I may be living with it for another year or two, so I guess I need to try and like it a little while longer!
Thank you VGaH - I love inspiration photos!
Manuela, you are so right about that! Though we aren't finished with the kitchen yet, it's nice to start thinking about other rooms!
Thanks for stopping in!
Love all the pictures, but I especially like that big cupboard. Not anything that would ever fit in this house, but it looks like an Inn in the French countryside or at least what I imagine such a place to be like...dreamy!

I too love the big cupboard. It is such a great focal point in the room. The nice thing about it is that it would be relatively easy to duplicate. Find a cupboard and paint it white...maybe with a glaze over top and it would look fabulous in a room and similar to the cupboard in the photo!
Lovely pictures!!! I have to say I love that sofa though. Everything looks great!

I was wondering the source of your sofa picture. Although the ticking wouldn't work for me, the tied back and rolled arms are great. Your website is energizing. I am just getting started on my own dedicated to the philosophy of improving our daily lives through beautiful interiors. See mine at: www.vampstamps.blogspot.com

Wow! Inspiring indeed...that middle photo is my favorite with the all white room. Breathtaking! :)
Love all your inspiration photos and LOVE those red and white antique chairs. I have an antique chair along those lines that was my Mom's and I have been dying to reupholster it but can't quite afford it yet. Right now it is orange velvet! Someday.
I just popped on over to your blog and have thoroughly enjoyed looking at the photos. Decorating on a budget to me is the only way to go. I love secondhand, giving it new life. Those red chairs are fabulous. I don't do red but if I did, I would definitely want these. Stop on over sometime and visit my blog. I am new to blogging and just getting started but having a ball doing it!!

OOOOOHHH! This is my first visit, and I'M IN LOVE! I am dreaming as I look at all these beautiful pics, and hopefully I'll be inspired too. What a PERFECT blog to find as I read DECORATING DREAMS ON A BUDGET! Thanks sooo much for the encouragement and lovely blog! (((((HUGS))))) sandi
Awwww! You have a corgi!! I love them. This is my first visit to your blog. Your living room is beautiful, and so are the inspiration photos.
You absolutely make me go crazy. I love it all and I want it all.
Keep going with the inspirations.
You've got me.
Just wanted to let ya know my mom and I are huge fans of your cottage. We love your approach to budget remodeling. Thanks so much for sharing!
Kim, I think you're like me......we have a change of heart before finishing a project and want to change our decorating direction!!! Does this mean we just take too long finishing things, ha!ha! So far though you have done such a marvelous job - even though you didn't share the McDonald's room colors with us! My dining room has been white, beige, red, deep gold and now is back to pale cream - been there, done that with the darker colors.......for the time being anyway! This mean I now have to repaint the entrance hall because I'm tired of the darkish green - it's going to be a light khaki in it's next life.
Do stop by - it's almost time for my first blog anniversary - thanks to you who inspired me when I found your blog, and helped get me known at the very beginning. I'm doing a little giveaway - hope you enter.
With thanks -

P.S. Love your sweet Corgi - the perfect English dog - just ask Her Majesty!!
Hey Kim-someone nominated me for a Spreader of Love blog award and I am passing it on to you. Hope you're having summer weather down there.
I need those red chairs! Great post.
My favorite for this kind of inspiration is Traditional Home magazine, they're big on French Country :)
When you mentioned the plasma, I thought of the art screens. You can actually have a piece of framed artwork, which retracts to reveal the screen when ready for TV viewing. I work for an electrical contractor which does A/V installations. We've put in a couple of these, which are on my way, way distant wish list! I also saw an article with a really cool photograph, blown up huge and put on a track (just like closet tracking)over a mantel piece w/ built-in shelves on either side. So, you'd just slide the artwork (could be anything, professionally enlarged) when ready for viewing. It looked great in the right room. However w/ the increasing popularity of flat-screens, often armoires are cheaper, because there's a decreasing demand for such.
Love the calming pictures. I love white myself!! Told myself I had to have all wicker furniture before too much longer, so I'd have strength to move it around..LOL
I haven't been around lately, but really love the way the kitchen and dining area turned out!! Beautiful!!
This is some beautiful eye candy. I especially love the paneled walls and ceiling..yumm!
