Life Comes at You Fast
Isn't that the truth?! I have to admit, I've been pretty bummed as of late because this year (so far) hasn't gone at all as I had planned. Our 13 year old van finally died. We knew it could happen at any time at this point, but we were hoping it wouldn't be this year. Afterall, we had big plans for this years tax refund - lots of home renovation projects to complete! Instead, we ended up purchasing a (new to us) van to replace our old one...there was just no getting around it. So I've had to spend a little time readjusting my attitude and reminding myself that all good things are worth the wait:).
One thing that I've noticed about myself, and I suppose this is a good thing, is that when things get tough, after the initial "Wow, this really, really stinks", I somehow manage to pull myself up by the bootstraps and try to figure out what step to take next. If I can't do anything about A, what can I do about B, C, or D? Now, sometimes it takes me a while - days or even weeks - to come to the realization that I haven't actually lost control of every single aspect of my life (as my overly dramatic inner self leads me to believe sometimes). But eventually I do come to the sensible conclusion that I've only hit a bump in the road and that I can either pull over and bemoan the bump or I can just keep driving and see where the road leads me. Or I slap myself silly while yelling "Pull yourself together, Woman!!! That works, too.
So we've been working on B, C, and D. We still had a few of our pine doors to install and so that is what we've been working on over the last couple of weekends. Oh how I love a solid wood door! There is nothing in the world like it (there goes my overly dramatic side again). The sound of a wooden door closing shut, to me anyway, is just melodious. One thing you don't know about me is that when no one is watching, I'll stand in the hallway and just open and close doors just to hear them shut. Ahhh...Does anyone know what I'm talking about? We have one more door to install and a couple more to order, and in the meantime we can be adding the little wood appliques to the door like we did in the door above.
One non-remodeling project that I've been wanting to get around to for a couple of years now is cleaning out our "attic" space. It's not actually an attic, it's really an unfinished bonus space above the garage, but either way, it's crammed to capacity with S T U F F. Clothes, toys, yard sale finds, old games, junk...you name it. There is so much up there and I've just been overwelmed by it all and have tried to ignore it, but it's just getting worse. So in my campaign against excess, I'll be tackling the bonus space (and the sunroom where lots of stuff seems to land) and having a yard sale this spring. I feel like these spaces have been holding me back in other areas of my life - when we're in the middle of a big renovation project or I'm thinking about pulling out my crafts, I can't help but to think about what I *should* be working on instead, namely, the junk spaces. I would love to just go ahead and get those areas cleaned out so I don't have to worry them anymore. I'm really trying to just get rid of things that I either don't have the room for or don't love as much as I once did. Why not pass them along for someone else to enjoy for a while? I sold the antique and vintage collection pictured above on Ebay last week and will be shipping it to it's new home tomorrow. Ahhhh - feels nice! I'm not impressed, though, with Ebay's fee increase and think I'll keep things local from now on with Craigslist or post a few things on my blog if I think I have something cottage lovers would be interested in.
I've also been really busy working on trying to get things in order for my little "Sweetest Treats You'll Never Eat" (faux desserts) business . I know, I was suppose to be on the ball with this last fall, but I'm realizing how I just don't function well without all my ducks in a row first. Clearing out space in our bonus area is part of the process because I'm quickly running out of space to store materials and products. But ohhhhh...I have so much planned that I can hardly sleep! I'm in the process now of taking photos of all the treats I've been working on over the last couple of months and I'll soon post them here and on my shop blog and make them available for purchase for those that are interested. I keep bouncing back and forth between using Etsy or my own website (even though my own website is 98% complete at this point!). I really need to move some of my inventory to make room for more - and let's face it, reclaim our kitchen island and use it for it's intended purpose, namely *real* (not faux) food preparation! I'm so pleased with what I've put together so far and my head is spinning with more ideas --- I can't wait to see them come to fruition!
How are your spring projects coming along? Hope you all are doing well!

It seems to be that magical time of year when that urge to purge and the need to be free from the clutter in our lives is hitting many of us full force. Although it was hard at first, having removed all of the clutter and personal effects from this house getting it staged to sell, I'm actually liking the more simplistic, uncluttered surroundings. I may choose not to display all of my "treasures" once we get the "new" house renovated.
Happy cleaning!
Kim,
Glad to hear from you! I know what you mean about "hidden" projects holding you back. I work and think much better when the cellar an the attic are cleaned out an organized.
Janet
PS. I love the appliques on the doors idea!!
I love wood doors too! The design is lovely. Good luck with the decluttering. I think the decluttering bug has hit many in full force recently.
Sorry to hear about the van. It always seems that that tax refund never seems to go where we would like it to go!
I feel the same way too, I feel so lighter and free when the basement is in order, funny isn't it.
Good luck with all your cleaning and i hope to see some of your things to purchase on your blog.
Have a good one, Janie
Hi Kim,
You have been busy girl!! It is a great time to clean and purge. And I know what you mean about eBay, I think I am going to start selling on my website instead. Their fees just keep going up.
Love your new doors. You just keep shutting them if that's what makes you happy.
Hugs,
LeAnn :)
Hi Kim! I am sorry to hear about your van. That's a real bummer. :o( I'm glad that you have such a great attitude about it...what a great idea to take the time to reorganize your space and declutter!
Have you thought about Etsy to sell your desserts? They look so real......
I have looked at many sights for remodel ideas in the kitchen. When we had some $$ about a yr ago we opted to buy granit counters but not new cabinets. They are real wood so I figured we could redo them. Stumbled upon your sight and was thrilled when I noticed the similarities in your layout and ours. the cabinet makeover that you did is exactly what I have been looking to do with ours. My question - do you recall the moulding that you used?
thanks - Sue, Cape Cod, MA
Just keep plugging ahead! I'm sorry to hear a new vehicle robbed you of renovation funds, but the important thing is to keep chipping away on SOMETHING! You will get there, always moving forward bit by bit. The doors are fantastic!
Hi Kim. Are you planning on painting the wood doors or staining them. I'm curious to see the look of a wood door with surrounding trim in white.
Kim, I love that little wooden detail you added to your door.
I've been cleaning things up over the winter too. My basement storage room. I called it "The Last Frontier!" I feel so much better having that cleaned, stuff removed and donated and everything in its place and labeled.
Blessings,
Sher
Hi Kim,
Sorry about the van, always seems to happen at the least opportune time.
Your words rang true for me, as well. My year has not gone according to plan. LOL
I was suppose to be out of this tiny house and into a new one by now, but the housing market has put a crimp in the plan. Like you, I'm focusing on my Plan B. Do what I can to this house, enjoy a mortgage-free life, "be content with...covering", "keep my eye simple", and focus on "the more important things". ;)
Your doors are beautiful and I hope you're able to clear those spaces and set up shop soon. A yard sale sounds good. I could really stand to have one this spring, too.
Take care.
Kimberly :)
Those treats look good enough to eat, though I'm sure no so tasty as the real thing.
I'm also "spring cleaning" even though it's autumn in Australia. Trying to simplify my home and my life. I'm quite enjoying it but it is a long and laborious task.
Love the doors too, and yes, I get it, lol. I have solid timber doors in my home and I love them.
I am going through our storage space too (read: our front bedroom) and have already gotten rid of two vans-full of items for donation. There is still much to go through in the rest of the room, not to mention other parts of the house, but its nice to feel that we are making progress.
We have also been redoing some cheaper things that make a big difference. One thing we did recently was to rip up the carpet (which I ***HATED***) in our living room, only to find some truly terrible wood floors underneath. A few of the boards had rotted from termite damage years ago (fortunately no more termites). We repaired what we could, and painted it. It cost about $25 for the entire project, and though it isn't ideal, it is SO much better than it was. For $25 it really makes a big difference and will definitely work for a happy solution until we can recarpet someday.
Hang in there! :)
Kristin
PS - stop on by the blog sometime if you're feeling up to it. :) I'd love to have you visit! :)

Im like you... had great plans for our income tax return for some serious remodeling...only to have it go for more "important" things. ACK!
Your doors are gorgeous! Thats another thing I need :)
Your door is just beautiful
It sounds like you have a lot going on in your life. Take care and don't overwork...and get all tired and frustrated. It all will happen!
I hope you do offer some of your things to sale in blogland...Ebay seems a hard place for sellers right now.
hugs, bj
Can't wait to be order some of those faux sweet treats. Hurry please! :D
I'm glad to know that I'm not alone, hehe! Spring cleaning, unexpected happenings, and so on...
Andrea, yes, I created an Etsy account but I think I decided to just create my own shop. Etsy is great, though! You're right, BJ - Ebay is tough!
Thanks for the compliments on the doors. We will be painting them all white.
Thanks for dropping in, everyone!
I can just see you opening and closing your doors in the hallway. What a satisfying thought!
I have been redecorating my bedroom since January! Hopefully this week I will get my chairs back from the upholsterer. I just can't believe how long it all takes but it is worth it in the end.Your sweet treats look wonderful! Eleanor at Thatchwick
There is something about springtime that gets the juices flowing. We're planning what projects we want to start ... but gotta clean out the garage first! :)
Wondering around Blog Land looking for kindred spirits & found you. :D I love vintage cookbooks. My blog is a hodge podge of things, but I blog about vintage recipes about 1x/wk. Pop on over. We'll have fun.
