Transformation of a Cottage Kitchen Part 1: Adding Windows and French Doors

I thought while we're taking some much needed time to tackle some big studio projects, this would be a good time to bring to the top some of my older kitchen project photos. Most of my transformation photos are spread between posts, so I've decided to put them together in an orderly fashion, project by project. Address your natural lighting and see if it can be improved if it is within your budget...Part 1 will be covering the very first thing we did in the kitchen: Improving the natural lighting by adding French doors and windows.

As you can see in the photo above, our kitchen was very dark. The only natural lighting came from a small kitchen sink window, a single exterior french door, and light spilling from my studio through an interior french door.

Here is what the east side of our kitchen looked like before we began. This side of the house gets so much light, it was a shame to waste it on an exterior wall!

So hubs and a friend went to task tearing out the dining room wall to make way for new windows. The area you seen torn out below was the old part of the house...everything to the right of "hole in the wall" was added in the nineties. This was still the dining area, but there was a back door on that wall, apparently. See where it once was? Even though our house is small, it's hard to believe it was once even smaller! {The kitchen was in what is now our laundry room, and the washer and dryer was in our tiny bathroom!}

The framing was made for the new windows. See the white paint on the walls? That was me experimenting to see what beadboard might someday look like. I'm still waitin' on that beadboard! In due time....

Next, we opened up the kitchen side of the wall to allow for the double french doors.

Talk about feeling exposed! The tiny, insulated piece of wall you see in the photo is where the fridge and a little partition wall is located.

The french doors go in!

And then the dining room windows... This photo was taken after the drywall went up - I'm not sure why I didn't take photos of the windows right after they were installed. Hmmm...

Finally, here were the windows after the farmhouse style trim was added. {I was really into green at the time.}

I think the new windows look great dressed up with curtains...

Or left bare to let the sun flood in...

I can't imagine that our cottage kitchen remodel would be quite the same if we left this project out. Somehow, the extra light makes the kitchen seem bigger than it really is, plus it gives the kitchen a whole new personality.

If you are contemplating remodeling your kitchen, I say first address your natural lighting and see if it can be improved if it's within your budget to do so. You'll be so glad you did {even if that means it takes you quite a while longer to get that beadboard you're dreaming about!}!!!

What was the next project we took on? Those builder basic honey oak cabinets! More on those in Part 2...

If you enjoyed reading about this project, please take a moment to rate it for a contest I've entered. Just scroll to the bottom where it says "rollover to rate this" and click on a star - 5 stars being the highest rating and 1 star being the lowest. I am so grateful to all those that have rated my spaces so far - Thank you!

Fall Themed Treat Packaging and A Huge Favor Please?

I 'm still on my little blogging hiatus {really!} but I just had to share with you a fun and simple fall food packaging idea before winter sneaks up on us! My daughter's class was studying apples last week and the teacher asked parents to send in apple treats if possible. I decided to make my girls' favorite muffin recipe - cinnamon apple! I wanted to make them a little more special since fall is my absolute favorite time of year...and because kids love things that are fun and unexpected.I had a nice little "pile of leaves" for my daughter to take to school So I ran to Wal-mart and grabbed a couple of bags of silk/fabric fall leaves {a dollar for a bag of 80 leaves}, some twine, and some plastic treat bags. In no time flat, I had a nice little "pile of leaves" for my daughter to take to school and share with her class.

With a hole punch, I just punched a hole at the top of the leaves, fed the twine through, and then tied up the muffin filled bags. The bags I used were pretty long, so instead of cutting them, I just folded them over. This added a little more "poof" to the top, which I liked.

I also made some mint chocolate chip cookies for my other daughter and packaged them much the same way using a different type of plastic bag. I punched a hole in the top of the bag, fed the twine with the leaf through, and tied it off with a simple knot.

I love how packaged treats look, don't you?

While hubs and I continue to work on my studio during my little blog break, I'd like to ask a huge favor from you dear readers.

I've entered a few of Twice Remembered's more popular projects in a contest and I'd be most appreciative if you could take a look at them and rate some or all of them.

At the bottom of each of my project pages linked to below, you'll see five stars next to where it says "Rollover to rate this:". You'll click on a star to rate the project, the 5th star being the highest rating and the 1st star being the lowest.

Thank you SO, so much for taking the time to help me out! I will post 12 of my projects in a new post that will stay at the top of my blog during my "working break". That way, if you can't rate them all at once, you can come back later and easily find the ones you'd like to rate.

You can click on the links below to view and rate my projects {or you can go here to see all the projects listed without the photos}. Each link contains more photos of the project. Thank you SO, so much for taking the time to help me out! If I'm privileged to win in one or more category, that means a little more cash flow for us to work on other projects here at Twice Remembered. So needless to say, your rating matters! Thanks again!

Doing a Double Fake & a Blogging Break

S ome of you long time readers may have already seen my "sweetest treats you'll never eat" - my faux dessert creations... but I thought I'd share a few past photos for the new visitors to Twice Remembered. These are my inspiration to keep chipping away at my studioWe'll be installing some cottage style architectural detail to the studio this weekend. so that I can someday produce them in earnest - and in a much more creative and organized atmosphere! Someday it will happen, though it is taking forever. Hubs and I have made a few studio design changes that I'm really excited about. We'll be installing some cottage style architectural detail to the studio this weekend. {More painting! yay! :l} Hubs says that I most certainly will never be finished with the studio if I keep making changes and adding projects, but I've told him that it has to be just right! Do you know that regretful feeling that you sometimes get when you finish a big project and think...I wish I would have done this or I wish I would have done that...? That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid!

I'm going to be taking some time off from blogging for a little while so that I concentrate on my work around here. But I'll be taking photos every step of the way and I will definitely share them when I return. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy looking at some of my old-fashioned faux treats! Take care, everyone!

{Ok, so the last one was one of my real cakes, but I sure would love to reproduce it in faux form!}
