Red Cottage Kitchen Vignettes and Hardwood Photos

Y ou all left such lovely comments in my last entry about our new hardwood flooring. Thank you! It was a backbreaking job as you may well know, but we are very pleased with how it turned out. I'm glad to hear that some of you have the same flooring and have been happy with it! For those of you who are eager to rip out your old linoleum or carpet, I understand! It will happen, and even if it takes much longer than you prefer to get to that point, it will be well worth the wait! {You'll be kissing your new floors, too, I'm sure!}

I was disappointed to see just how grainy the photos were in my last entry as I looked at them in theFor now, the kitchen is my playground. morning light so I rephotographed them and replaced them. I spent some time, too, capturing some little kitchen vignettes. {I know it seems like the kitchen is really the only place I photograph vignettes, but that's because the rest of the house is pretty much a great big embarrassing "before" that needs a lot of work still.} For now, the kitchen is my playground as far as decorating fun goes, though the studio is getting there...

Last week I shared with you some photos of the kitchen floor "surgery" we had to perform recently in order to prepare for the laying of the hardwood, along with some additional history about our kitchen. In short, I've been waiting for this flooring for a looooooong time.I feel like the hardest parts of the kitchen remodel are behind us It has been a slow, labor intensive journey getting to this point with our kitchen. We've been working on it little by little for over three years now, but when you're on a budget, slow progress is better than none at all, right? We still have to tackle the trim work, install/paint beadboard, and work on a few other small projects I've been dreaming about for a while, but I feel like the hardest parts of the kitchen remodel are behind us. We've knocked out walls to install windows and french doors, installed a new plank ceiling and lighting, added trim to and then painted our standard honey oak cabinets, installed a new countertop, backsplash, and faucet, replaced the appliances, and finally over the course of the last two weekends, laid the hardwood flooring.

Just about all the accessories you see in the photos came from Goodwill, yard sales, or the flea market. A couple of things were purchased from Ebay. I think my favorite recent finds are the old mortar and pestle {it was $1}, the cake plate and dome {$5!}, the antique cookbook {$1}, and the Morton's salt tin {.50}.

I hope you enjoy these random shots of our "kitchen in progress". Can you picture it with white beadboard around the entire perimeter? Can you picture the dining area with a fireplace? {More on that in the future!} Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas for this space!

First a "before":

And now a few million "afters":

I wasn't going to show you this side of the room since there are boxes of flooring stacked up, but I wanted to tell you that I'm making plans to put a fireplace on the wall that the map is on. The kids LOVE this giant, laminate map and they all want it in their room. One map, three kids sharing two rooms. That still leaves not enough map to go around. Hmmm...

And a before and after taken from the same angle. {Maybe there is potential for the rest of this house afterall?}:

If you like this project, I'd appreciate your vote in a contest I've entered at Repair-Home.Com. Just scroll to the bottom and click on "Rollover to rate this".

Also, you can rate my kitchen now on HGTV's Rate My Space...Thanks so much for your support!

Oh Kim! The floors look fantastic!
It makes such a difference in the look of the room, doesn't it?
Of course, your kitchen was already beautiful...but in our house, having the floors done finally made the room look "finished".

Great job!

That is a beautiful kitchen! My husband and I were thinking about installing hardwood in our kitchen. When installing hardwood in your kitchen, did you remove the dishwasher to install the hardwood or did you just install it around the dishwasher? I was worried that if we removed the dishwasher that it may not fit back into its little home!

September 23, 2009 at 7:24 AM
Kim @ Twice Remembered said...

Aw, thanks so much! About the dishwasher, we didn't run the hardwood under the dishwasher. Our dishwasher already sits upon a little plywood platform to make it just the right height for the counter, so we just butted the flooring up against the platform.:)

Your hardwood is absolutely stunning but I have to say the vignettes are my favorite pictures! I love looking at them. I can't do minimal accessories so it's wonderful to see someone else that loves to put things here and there, out on counters. Once in a while I clear my kitchen counters off and try to only put half the "stuff" back on. It never lasts long.
Gorgeous photos, you have a true talent for decorating and photography.
If you have a minute come check out my door on my blog. I would love your opinion.

Love your new photos! And that you're so in love with your kitchen! It's really brautiful!
Is there a hallway wall near the kids' bedrooms that's large enough for the big map? Some other area they spend time in or pass every day? It's a great map... would be a shame to lose it... but a fireplace in the dining room is such a great idea!

While I continue to be inspired by the entire kitchen (love the new flooring!) I am most inspired by the vignettes. I just wanted to drop you by a comment and say that I recently stumbled upon your blog and I cannot get enough, you have such a beautiful home full of amazing inspiration.

I have recently started to focus on a cottage style for our home, but we have a large looming red wall in our living room/dining room that it almost the same shade as your cabinets. I have never minded the wall but I was always afraid it was much too bold for the relaxed casual cottage feel I am after; my husband however loves it and would kill me if I painted over it.
You kitchen has shown me that natural wood, white furniture and accents and a cheerful dose of red can look amazing together. I am no longer worried about our red wall, and instead I embrace it as an outward symbol of our bright personalities. Thank you for sharing your beautiful kitchen!

God Bless, Melissa

THANK YOU! We decided to stain our cabinets red mahogany but with our gold tile floor and red brick backsplash I just couldn't visualize it. But after running across your kitchen photos, I can rest easy. OF COURSE! White as the accent color! I love your use of white pottery against the white brick, and the black and silver touches will help tie in our stainless appliances. Your cottage style and vignettes are just brilliant. I will use your photos for inspiration and, most importantly, I can finally stop obsessing! Thanks!

Hi,I am new to your blog. I too have been trying to work up the courage to make the leap to red. My cabinets are primed and ready for color. I am wondering if you would share the brand and paint color as well as the finish of your cabinets. Also, did you do some antiquing to the red? Thanks so much!

Hi My name is Rebecca.i just want to share my experience with the world on how i got my love back and saved my marriage… I was married for 7 years with 4 kids and we lived happily until things started getting ugly and we had a fights and arguments almost every time… it got worse at a point that he filed for divorce… I tried my best to make him change his mind & stay with me cause i loved him with all my heart and didn’t want to loose him but everything just didn’t work out… he moved out of the house and still went ahead to file for divorce… I pleaded and tried everything but still nothing worked. The breakthrough came when someone introduced me to this wonderful, great spell caster Dr Zuma, who eventually helped me out… I have never been a fan of things like this but just decided to try reluctantly cause I was desperate and left with no choice… He did special prayers and cast a love spell on him. Within 24hours he called me and was sorry for all the emotional trauma he had cost me, moved back to the house and we continue to live happily, the kids are happy too and we are expecting our fourth child… I have introduced him to a lot of couples with problems across the world and they have had good news… Just thought I should share my experience cause I strongly believe someone out there needs it… You can contact him on spiritualherbalisthealing@gmail.com whatsapp +15068001647
